What is a Complex Sentence?
  • A complex sentence is a combination of one
    independent clause and one dependent clause.
  • 2 separate ideas
  • 1. Roger forgot his wedding anniversary for the
    tenth straight year, and
  • 2. Roger spent a week sleeping on the porch.
  • Complex Sentence
  • Because he forgot his wedding anniversary for
    the tenth straight year, Roger spent a week
    sleeping on the porch.

Independent Clause
  • An independent clause is a group of words that
    contains a subject and verb and expresses a
    complete thought. An independent clause is a
    sentence.
  • Ex "She is older than her brother"
  • The hobo passed through town unnoticed.

Dependent Clause
  • A dependent clause is a group of words that
    contains a subject and verb but does not express
    a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be
    a sentence. Often a dependent clause is marked by
    a dependent connecting word.
  • Ex "Because she is older than her brother
  • As the hobo passed through town

  • (When the hurricane landed)
  • A Complex Sentence
  • (The wind blew furiously, when the hurricane
    landed.)

Technology Activity(MS Word)
  • Have the activity on the TV screen.
  • Have the students create a complex sentence.
  • The students will come up one at a time to type
    their sentence.
  • Then they will highlight the sentence that was
    input before them. (use the highlighting tool)
  • Repeat process until all students has a turn.
