What are Universal Precautions?(Ways to protect
yourself from Bloodborne Pathogens)
  • Encourage self-care
  • Avoid contact with blood
  • Cover open sores and cuts
  • Use recess duty kit -gloves
  • Wash Hands

What is a Bloodborne Pathogen?
  • An infectious agent that can be transmitted
    through blood or mucous membranes

Assume everyone you come in contact with is
potentially infectious! If it is wet and did
not come from your body, DO NOT TOUCH IT!

When to Seek Medical Care
  • Regardless of whether barrier protection was used
    or hepatitis vaccine received
  • Were fluids splattered or splashed into mouth,
    eyes, nose or open cuts on exposed skin?
  • Did you receive a cut or puncture wound
    from contaminated items?
  • Did you have prolonged contact
  • with unidentified body fluids?

If yes to any of these questions..Report the
incident immediately
  • See Kay or Min (School Nurses) within 2 hours for
    screening, to determine if an exposure incident
    has occurred.
  • Complete a Post Exposure Packet in the Nurses
    Office.
  • In the nurses absence, with administrators
    approval, go to LAMC Urgent Care for evaluation.
  • Upon returning to school, contact Kay or Min for
    a follow up conference.

  • Protect yourself
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Contact office to report blood spills in school

Contact one of the nurses if you are concerned
about an exposure incident
