• When you think of the Tasmanian devil you might
  think of an out of control devil in cartoons that
  rips apart trees that are in its way. There is
  more to that story than they tell you in
  cartoons. I would like to tell you what they
  dont tell you.

• The Tasmanian devil is black and has a collar
  or patch that is white. The Tasmanian devil is
  usually the size of a small terrier dog . A weird
  fact about the Tasmanian devil is it has a hard
  nose. It weighs about 6 to 8 kilograms. It s tail
  is about 9 to 12 inches long. The Tasmanian devil
  also has an extremely powerful head with a wide
  jaw. It also has very sharp teeth. It has pink
  ears. They get red when the Tasmanian devil gets
  mad.They have black piercing eyes to help it feed
  at night. It is a marsupial and has a thick tail.

• The Tasmanian devil lives in Tasmania. It lives
  in costal shrub and eucalypt forests. It
  sometimes wanders to human settlements. In the
  day time it keeps hidden in its den which is
  lined with grass or leaves. The den could be
  logs,or old wombat burrows. It also sometimes
  lives in rainforests.

Feeding

• The Tasmanian devil eats carrion (dead
  animals.) They also eat the whole body (including
  the meat, fur,and bones.) They kill their own
  prey and prefer small animals. The Tasmanian
  devil kills prey by bighting the back or the back
  of the neck. They eat anything on the ground.
  They also need water. It will kill other
  Tasmanian devils when protecting its food supply.

History

• In the past the Tasmanian devil was found all
  over Australia. When the dingo began competing
  for the same food source the Tasmanian devil were
  killed in large numbers. To survive extinction
  they swam over the Bass Straight to Tasmania. The
  dingo was not able to cross the Bass Straight.
  The Tasmanian devil population decreased due to
  bounty hunters, settlers and the Tasmanian tiger
  which is now extinct.

• The Tasmanian devil can run 8 mph.
• There are between 20,000 to 50,000 left.
• They are nocturnal.
• The Tasmanian devil is almost extinct because of
  cancer.
• It has 42 teeth.
• They are good climbers and swimmers.
• They can live up to 7 years.
• The Tasmanian devil can open its mouth to a 120
  degrees.

• I learned a lot about the Tasmanian devil. I
  hope you learned a lot too. I had a great time
  doing this project. I was surprised that since
  they could swim it saved them from extinction. I
  never knew there was a real devil.
