1
Greater Involvement of PLHIV(NGO Code of Good
Practice)
  • Thami Sonile

2
The NGO Code
  • The Code of Good Practice for NGOs was created
by a broad consortium of NGOs to provide shared
vision of good practice to which NGOs can commit
    and be held accountable
  • The Code outlines the key principles and
practices that are informed by evidence and
underscore successful NGO responses to HIV

3
The NGO Code
  • Sees the involvement of people living with HIV
and affected communities as a specific expression
of the right to active, free and meaningful
participation in all aspects of the HIV and Aids
    response

4
Principles of MIPA
  • Advocating for the meaningful involvement of
PLHIV and affected communities in all aspects of
    the HIV responses
  • Fostering active and meaningful involvement of
PLHIV and affected communities in our work

5
GIPLWA
  • affected communities is defined in the Code as
the range of people affected by HIV and Aids,
including people at particular risk of HIV
infection and those who bear a disproportionate
burden of the impact of HIV and Aids

6
Benefits of GIPLWA
  • It enables individuals and communities to draw
in their lived experiences thus contributing to
    reducing stigma and discrimination
  • It increases the effectiveness and
    appropriateness of the HIV response

7
Meaningful Involvement of Women Girls Living
with HIV (MIWA)
  • Globally, half of all adults living with HIV are
    female.
  • Women and girls make up an increasing proportion
of the population living with HIV
  • The meaningful involvement of women and girls
living with HIV (MIWA) in the development ,
design and delivery of HIV programmes and
services is key for ensuring that these are
relevant, accessible and usable to women and
    girls around the world

8
NGOs need to consider that..
  • The realities of HIV positive women and girls are
reflected in prevention, care, treatment and
    support activities
  • Services fit and work from women and girls rather
than women and girls to fit services
  • Programmes include a focus on women and girls
that are already living with HIV

9
Key Observations
  • Skills levels among PLWA
  • Strengthening the institutional capacity of PLWA
  • Representation of PLWA
  • Meaningful Involvement
  • Meaningful Involvement of women and Girls

10
GIPLWA
  • As NGOs we advocate for the accountability of
government, private and public sector agencies
and others. We too, must be accountable to the
communities we are part of, work with, represent
    and serve.
  • Accountability, transparency and effective
    stewardship of resources are crucial

11
Questions for Reflection
  • Does your organisation advocate for PLHIV to
participate in decision making or policy making
bodies and ensure their input is equally valued?
  • Does your organisation advocate for PLHIV to
carry out real and meaningful roles in HIV
interventions such as counsellors, peer educators
    etc
