Title: The Organic Revolution

1
The Organic Revolution
2
The Organic RevolutionHow, where why did it
begin?
3
The Organic Revolutionstarted here!
An Agricultural Testament by Sir Albert
Howard 1940 Agricultural Adviser to States in
Central India and Rajputana, Africa, UK and North
America

The Organic Revolution
THE maintenance of the fertility of the soil is
the first condition of any permanent system of
agriculture. In the ordinary processes of crop
production fertility is steadily lost its
continuous restoration by means of manuring and
soil management is therefore imperative. Sir
Albert Howard, 1940
5
The Organic Revolution
JR Rodale, American organic pioneer (August 16,
1898 June 8, 1971), playwright, editor, author
and publisher, was one of the first advocates of
a return to sustainable agriculture and organic
farming in the United States. He founded a
publishing empire, founded several magazines, and
published many books on health. Rodale
popularized the term "organic" to mean grown
without pesticides, herbicides chemical
fertilizers.
6
The Rodale Institute
Organic systems are changing lives, building hope
and restoring communities. Rodale Institute is
putting its 60 years of sustainable farming
experience and extensive research to work to
provide farmers with the know-how, tools and
techniques they need to succeed policy-makers
the information they need to best support our
farmers and consumers with the resources they
need to make informed decisions about the food
they buy and eat.
7
Research from Rodale Institute's ongoing Farming
Systems Trial, the longest running research trial
comparing organic and non-organic farming in the
United States, also shows that regenerative
farming methods can curb global warming
improve the nutrient value of food
prevent famine when farmers use these
affordable and sustainable techniques

The Organic Revolution
"The truth, so effectively suppressed that it is
now almost impossible to believe, is that organic
farming is the key to feeding the world." --
"Biotech has bamboozled us all -- Studies suggest
that traditional farming methods are still the
best" The Guardian, August 24, 2000

After spending seven incredible months in India,
I had the good fortune to open Canadas first
vegetarian restaurant in 1967, as part of a
commitment to right livelihood. Starting capital

In 1969 I returned to India and had an
unexpected arranged marriage to my wonderful
life companion, Ratana. This took place in Sawan
Ashram, Delhi, in the presence of our spiritual
guide, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj (1894-1974)
16
The seventies saw the blossoming of the natural
food movement. In 1971, a partner and I opened
LifeStream Natural Foods, which became the
largest operation of its kind in Canada.
The partnership dissolved and we parted ways
in 1981. Then my wife and I started Natures Path
in 1985 out of the back of our veggie restaurant.
There was no end of challenges nor opportunities.
1972
17
In 1990, we opened North Americas first
certified organic cereal plant, and almostwent
broke in the process, but then, a success is a
failure than never gave up.
18
In 1994, we expanded to Blaine, WA and built our
second organic cereal plant.
19
In 2008, Natures Path expanded again, this time
to Sussex, Wisconsin
