Jane Schaffer Writing
  • What it is
  • What it is not
  • Why we do it
  • How to do it
  • Why you wont complain

3
WHO AND WHAT IT IS
  • Jane Schaffer is an English teacher from San
    Diego, California.
  • She developed this method to make it EASIER for
students to write a multi-paragraph essay.
  • The Jane Schaffer Writing System is a program the
Riverview School District uses at Tolt and
    Cedarcrest to teach writing.
  • This method gives all students and teachers in
these schools a common language when discussing
    essays.

4
WHAT IT IS NOT
  • It is not the only way to create a response to a
literary analysis prompt for writingit will not
melt your brain as some have claimed.
  • Learning this method will not take the place of
other ways of writing cause spasms or other
    horrid writing side effects.
  • This method will not replace the mode used for
    creative writing in your brain.

5
WHY WE DO IT
  • We learn the Jane Schaffer Method in 6th grade so
that we will understand the vocabulary for
writing at Tolt and Cedarcrest - and most high
    school English departments
  • This prepares you for 7th and 8th grade
  • All Language Arts teachers at Tolt will use these
terms and expect you to know who to create
    chunk paragraphs
  • We will be using this in other subjects as well
    so get used to it

6
HOW TO DO JANE SCHAFFER
  • This writing method at 6th grade uses four colors
of PEN to create paragraph (this is why you are
required to have a 4-color pen)
  • RED IS FOR CONCRETE DETAIL (CD) Red ink is used
to write a detail from the text that responds to
    the prompt
  • GREEN IS FOR COMMENTARY (CM) Green ink is used
to write your comments about the concrete detail
and how it applies to the prompt

7
MORE
  • BLUE is for your TOPIC SENTENCE (TS) and for your
CONCLUDING SENTENCE (CS) Blue ink is used for
your topic and concluding sentences because they
will relate to each other (but they wont be just
    alike)
  • BLACK IS FOR YOUR FINAL DRAFT Black ink is for
your completed paragraph AFTER you have created
and perfected it using the other colors.

8
What we will do today
  • Today we are only going to practice finding one
    CD concrete detail
  • Then maybe create one or two CMs commentaries
  • For homework you will create the TS and CS
    topic and concluding sentences.
  • THIS IS DUE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2009

9
WHY YOU WONT COMPLAIN
  • I have heard students at Tolt moan and complain
whenever I say Jane Schaffer. However, know
this, in my class (whatever that may be) if I
hear any complaints, moaning, crying, heavy
sighs, or general expressions of horror, I will
add on an extra JS paragraph homework assignment
due the following day or during lunch depending
on the loudness of the complaints.
  • We do this here at all grade levels from here on
out so get used to it.

10
Prompt

    persistence?
