How far does the soap reflect an accurate
representation?

• What were your findings?

Soaps may not always be realistic but their
success relies on creating realism! However,
often criticised for not representing groups of
people in a positive or true way (helping to
create negative stereotypes)

Hollyoaks

• Hollyoaks is totally unique. It goes out five
  nights a week, is filmed considerably faster and
  on am much smaller budget, yet still picks up
  awards alongside Coronation Street and
  Eastenders. It is targeted at young people and
  goes out at 6.30pm, but it is one of the most
  successful home-grown programmes on channel 4.
  Going on the feedback we receive, it can also
  make a difference to peoples lives. Covering
  male rape and self-harming in the way that we did
  undoubtedly helped teenagers whod been through
  similar experiences. What makes us completely
  different though is the humour. We often cut
  between something very heavy and
  thought-provoking to something utterly silly and
  light-hearted in a way that no one else does.
  Life is like that. In any street one family may
  be in the middle of a terrible crisis while their
  neighbours are laughing and I think we reflect

• A docudrama is a dramatization of actual
  historical events.
• Docudramas tend to demonstrate some or most of
  the following characteristics
• A focus on the facts of the event being treated,
  as they are known
• The use of literary and narrative techniques to
  flesh out story-like the bare facts of an event
  in history
• A tendency to avoid overt commentary and explicit
  assertion of the creator's own point of view or
  beliefs.
