What is a somatoform disorder?

• Physical symptoms with no physical cause
• Pain is common
• Cause emotional distress and impaired functioning
• Often comorbid with depression and anxiety
  disorders

Types of Somatoform Disorders

• Conversion disorder
• Somatization Disorder
• Pain disorder
• Hypochondriasis
• Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Conversion Disorder

• Numbness or paralysis
• Formerly known as hysteria
• Frued conversion on intrapsychic stress into
  physical symptoms
• Have to exclude physical illness
• More common in women

Somatization Disorder

• Requires pain in four areas of body
• Two gastrointestinal problems
• One sexual
• One neurological
• More common in women
• Less common than conversion

Pain Disorder

• Significant pain in one anatomical area
• Pain is psychological in origin
• Headaches and abdominal pain is common
• Fibromyalgia

Hypochondryasis

• Preoccupation with having a serious illness
• Similar to OCD
• Affects 3 of population

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

• Preoccupied with imagined or minor defect
• Commonly considered normal or attractive by
  others
• Common areas skin, hair, nose
• Compulsive mirror checking
• Affects 1-2 of population
• Suicide rate is higher than normal population
