2The Story of New Amsterdam
3Which Europeans first came to the area we now
call Manhattan? The shoes are a clue.
4Map of Europe
This is a close-up of Holland. People who live
here are Dutch. Henry Hudson was English, but he
set sail from Holland.
5Four hundred years ago, in the 1600s, the Dutch
East India Company (from Holland) was a powerful
and successful company. The company traded
spices and other riches of Asia. They funded
Henry Hudson's voyage to find a route to Asia
through North America in 1609. If Hudson could
find a secret shortcut to Asia, the Company would
make even more money.
6Henry Hudson
- Henry Hudson was an English explorer
- He really wanted to find a way to get to Asia by
going West instead of East - The Dutch East India Company thought this way
would be faster. Their ships could go back and
forth from Europe to Asia more quickly, and then
they could make more money. - The Dutch East India Company paid Henry Hudson
to sail for them to find this way to Asia
7Knowing that Henry Hudson was an explorer and a
sailor, Why do you think the Half Moon is
important?
8The Half Moon is a ship. Henry Hudson sailed the
Half Moon to North America in 1609. Lets see
what the boat looked like.

A replica that you can visit today
10Cut Away of The Half Moon
What do you notice about this view of the Half
Moon? What might life be like on a ship like this
during a voyage?
11Henry Hudson set sail in 1609,
but he did not find a passage to Asia.

13Looking for a route to Asia,
Henry Hudson found a protected harbor leading to
a wide river. He followed the river and could
not find a route to Asia because such a route
did not exist!
14Now, why do you think the river is named the
Hudson River?
15While Hudson did not find a new route to Asia,
his adventures in North America--near todays New
York--led other people to come to New Amsterdam
because they found many _________ that people in
Europe used for coats and hats. Can you think
of what was found? (fill in the blank.)
16They found many BEAVERS that people in Europe
used for coats and hats.
This woman is wearing a hat made from beaver skin.
This is a beaver skin coat.
17Beaver fur was fashionable during the 1600s in
Europe. Dutch traders came to New Amsterdam and
set up outposts where they could trade for beaver
fur with the Native Americans. But hold on!
Native Americans?
18Who was already settled in the area the Dutch
called New Amsterdam?
19The Lenape Indians
were living in the area we now call Manhattan! We
know all about them!
20They called the land Manahata, which means
island or hilly island.
21Lenape Indians encounterthe "Half Moon" - 1609
This is from a journal entry from a person
sailing on the Half Moon "When some of them saw
our ship approaching afar off, they did not know
what to think but stood in deep and
solemn amazement.
22How do you think the Native Americans felt when
the Dutch ship arrived? How would things change?
23How do you think Henry Hudson and his crew felt
as they arrived? What would it be like to
arrive in a new place?
24After Henry Hudsons voyage, the Dutch founded a
city called New Amsterdam. In only 50 years, this
is what the city looked like!
We will be learning all about New Amsterdam this
month in Social Studies!!
