Main ideas and Why it matters
  • Main ideas-Fishing and trade contributed to the
    growth and prosperity.
  • Why it matters now- Coastal cities in New England
    continued to trade.

3
Terms and Names
  • Backcountry-faraway from the coast near the
    Appalachian Mountain, ideal for farming.
  • Subsistence farming-a farm that produces enough
food for the family that owns the farm and a
    small amount for trade.
  • Triangular trade- transatlantic system of trade
    in which goods were moved.
  • Navigation Acts-Laws that insured England would
    get money from colonies.
  • Smuggling- to illegally import and export goods.

Distinct colonial regions
  • Between 1700 and 1750 the population of New
Englands colonies quadrupled. At the start of
the century the colonial population was at 25700.
By 1750 more than 1170000 people were English and
were in America. By the 1700s the colonies
formed three distinct regions the New England,
the middle colonies and southern colonies to
the back of them was the Appalachian Moutains.

The Farms and towns of New England
  • Life was not easy for the colonists, the
seasons were short and the soil was rocky. Most
English lived near a town, so they could sell
land to people there or go into town to sell
crops. Usually a cluster of houses surrounded a
central square where the meeting house was.

7
Changes in Puritans society
  • The early 1700s saw many changes in New
Englands society. One most important was the
decline of Puritan religions. The reason was
competition from other religious groups, the
Baptists and Anglicans established churches in
    Massachusetts and Connecticut. Political changes
    also weakened the Puritans community.
