What are Street Drugs?
  • Companies that manufacture drugs sold as
    medicines follow strict government regulations
  • Strength of drug, known risks, side effects,
    etc(commercials?)
  • Street Drug any drug that is made or sold
    outside of these laws
  • Nobody to check consistency or make-up of the drug

Marijuana
  • Most commonly used street drug
  • Main active chemical is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol
    ) -which affects the brain
  • Common street names
  • Pot, Grass, Weed, and Joint
  • Most commonly marijuana is smoked, which causes
  • Lung problems
  • Frequent colds
  • Carries 3-5 times the amount of tar and other
    cancer-causing substances found in tobacco smoke

Hallucinogens
  • Hallucinogens drugs that distort moods,
    thoughts, senses
  • Physical effects of hallucinogens
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Lack of muscle coordination
  • Decreased sensitivity to pain
  • Psychological effects of hallucinogens
  • Cause user to see things that are not there
  • Trigger uncontrolled, violent behavior
  • Cause user to lose sense of direction, distance,
    and time
  • Often these things lead to misjudgments that
    result in serious injury and death

  • PCP (phencyclidine), powerful hallucinogen whose
    effects last a long time
  • Produces strange, destructive behavior
  • LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), powerful
    hallucinogen
  • Produces rapid mood swings and hallucinations
  • Terrifying thoughts and feelings that the person
    is going crazy

Inhalants
  • Inhalants any substance whose fumes are sniffed
    and inhaled to produce mind-altering sensations
  • Common household products may be abused spray
    paint, cleaning fluid, lighter fluid, hair spray,
    nail polish remover, etc.
  • Fumes commonly cause headache, nausea, vomiting,
    and loss of coordination
  • Can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and brain

  • Club Drugs drugs that are associated
    w/nightclubs, concerts, and all night dance
    parties called Raves
  • Designer drugs -synthetic version of a natural
    drug
  • Look-alike drugs -drugs that resemble and are
    passed off as another drug

  • Some are colorless, odorless, and tasteless
  • Drug slipping when a drug is slipped into
    someones food or beverage without that persons
    knowledge (sometimes called date rape drugs)
  • Ecstasy (sometimes called E, X, and XTC)
  • Its a stimulant and hallucinogen in a pill form
  • Can cause confusion, sweating, depression,
    anxiety, nausea, faintness, chills, etc.
  • Can cause permanent brain damage (first time use)

  • GHB (sometimes called liquid ecstasy, liquid
    X, Georgia home boy, Grievous Bodily Harm)
  • Depressant
  • Can be made in liquid or powder form
  • Especially dangerous when taken w/alcohol or
    other drugs
  • Combination may result in coma or death
  • Rohypnol (sometimes called date rape drug,
    roofies, and R-2)
  • Sedative (calms person down, affecting central
    nervous system, causes sleepiness-addictive)
  • Has no taste or odor
  • Sleepiness may last 2-8 hours and user may black
    out

  • Ketamine
  • Anesthetic used for medical purposes, mostly
    treating animals
  • Causes hallucinations and dreamlike states
  • Use may result in death through respiratory
    failure
  • Anabolic Steroids (by definition-NOT A CLUB
    DRUG)
  • Increase muscle development
  • Cause acne, mood swings, nausea, liver damage,
    brain cancers, shortening of final height when
    taken by children or teens
