The Job Search
  • To be successful in the job hunt, you need to
    have a plan.
  • 1. List all the companies where you would like
    to work.
  • 2. Prepare a resume.
  • 3. Contact the person in the company who is
    responsible for hiring.

3
Please Note
Job hunting takes work! Job openings will not
wait for you you must find them!
4
Sources of Information
  • Want Ads (or Classified ads)
  • Two types-
  • 1. Open Ad- gives specific information about the
    job, pay, benefits, the company.
  • 2. Closed Ad- gives general information about
the job. Salary/wages company name are seldom
given. Instead you have to write to a PO Box or
call a number listed for more information.

5
Sources of Information- cont.
  • Networking- is talking with people and
establishing relationships that can lead to more
    information about potential openings. Networking
can begin long before you look for a job.
  • Networking involves developing contacts with
people who are interested in you and are willing
to help you in your search.
  • A good network should benefit all who are
    involved.

6
Networking- cont.
  • Sources include
  • Friends, family, school (college) placement
services, direct employer contact, teachers, past
    employers, state private employment services.
  • Note In networking, the better you know the
person, the more reliable the information
    personal their interest.

7
Sources of Information- cont.
  • Internet-
  • Use of the web is fast becoming the way to find
a job. However, many employers want to meet you
face to face. It is strongly recommended that
you use this as an entrance to an opening, but
that you follow up in person. Try to narrow your
search as much as possible when searching the web.

8
Sources of Information- cont.
  • Direct Employer Contact
  • This is one of the best ways to find a job.
(Sometimes this is referred to as beating the
pavement.) This method is successful for about
half of those who do this. (by far the best
    percentage)
  • - Begin by contacting the person responsible for
hiring. Normally, this is the personnel/human
    resource department.

9
Direct Employer Contact- cont.
  • If there is no personnel/HR department, contact
should be made with the manager.
  • Ask for the name of the HR Director or manager.
Using his/her name when speaking with them is
    always a plus.
  • It is very helpful to know an employee of the
company who can speak positively about you.
    (Networking)

10
Sources of Information- cont.
  • Community Bulletin Boards
  • Jobs are often placed on community bulletin
boards in stores, libraries, or public buildings.
  • You may want to place your own ad for a
position you are looking for on such a bulletin
    board.

11
Sources of Information- cont.
  • Private Employment Agency- a business that help
people find jobs. This type of employment agency
receives a fee from either the employer or
applicant. If you are asked to sign a contract
    read it over carefully.
  • Public Employment Agency- a service that is
supported by the government. They do not charge
    fees for services.
