9The Staff and the Treble Clef
- The Staff is a five-line, four-space symbol
system used to capture music in writing - The Treble Clef defines the function of the lines
and spaces of the staff - It is useful to remember the names of the lines
and spaces of the staff by assigning phrases with
words that begin with the letter names

13The Staff
- Ledger lines
- - Lines that extend the staff up and down
- - To the children these are the invisible lines
of the staff that only show up when they are
needed
14Pitch
- Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds
- The staff provides fixed reference points to show
pitches visually - The clef is a symbol placed on the staff to
indicate the pitches assigned to each line and
space - The treble clef is the one most often used when
writing songs, especially for children
15Pitch
- The seven possible pitch names are A,B,C,D,E,F,G
- After G, the letters repeat as many times as
possible - An octave is the distance between two notes of
the same name (A to A)
16Pitch
- Some notes require a modifying symbol
- The symbol indicates what will be done to the
pitch of that note - Sharp - raises the pitch of the note one half
step - Flat - lowers the pitch of the note one half
step - Natural cancels a sharp or a flat previously
applied or refers to the white key notes
17Pitch
- On a keyboard, the white keys are the natural
notes - The black keys are the sharp and flat notes
- The sharp of any white key is the nearest black
key on the right side - The flat of any white key is the nearest black
key on the left side
18Pitch
- A scale is a series of pitches covering one
octave that moves up or down according to a
specified pattern of intervals - Interval the distance from one pitch to another
- Scales are basis for all melodies
- Most common forms are the major and minor scales
- Modality Major happy Minor sad

the clef and before the time signature that
indicate what notes will be affected by sharps or
flats throughout the entire piece - Shoo Fly is in F major there is one flat in
the Key Signature, B-flat (Bb), which means that
all of the Bs in the piece are B-flats
21Pitch
- Harmony the simultaneous sounding of pitches
- A triad consists of three notes sounded at the
same time - Most common are major (from major scale) and
