Planning writing
  • Ensure students
  • Read the title again and underline the most
    important words.
  • Select the best ideas from the brainstorm
  • Order these ideas into paragraphs and sentences

10
Planning writing
  • Students are often reluctant to plan they see
it as a waste of writing time.
  • Stress the importance of careful planning to task
    fulfilment.
  • Answers that fulfil the task are much more likely
to get higher grades than ones which do not.

From plan to writing
  • Last year I went on holiday to England. I went
with my mum, dad and sister. It was the best
    holiday I have ever had.
  • England is a lovely place. The sun always
shines, the people are friendly and the food is
wonderful. We went to Chichester a small city in
the South of England. It is near the beach. We
went to the beach every day and swam in the warm
    clear blue sea.
  • I met a friend called John and we played
football on the beach. I went to his birthday
party at his house and had a great time. It was
the best holiday I have ever had because I met my
    friend John.

16
Checking writing
  • Give students practice in checking common
    mistakes in writing.

17
Checking writing
  • Have the students check each others work for
    mistakes

18
Checking writing
  • As you mark their work make a list of the common
    mistakes you find.
  • Write an answer to the question including these
    common mistakes.
  • Give the class the answer and ask them to correct
    it

19
Checking writing
  • Get students to make a list of the mistakes they
    make in their writing.
  • After they have written something get them to
check it using the list, so they know what to
    look for.

20
Timed practice
  • Give students timed practice so the know how long
they have to brainstorm, plan, write and check
    their work

because the emphasis is on reading not writing

Summary writing
  • Summary writing tests a candidates ability to
  • Understand the original text, its structure and
direction, main and minor points, its argument
    etc.
  • Understand the specific task
  • Organise the relevant information
  • Have tight control over their language

34
Summary writing
  • The candidates opinion is not asked for
  • Formal style is required
  • Words are limited, careful organisation is needed
  • Candidates should use the blank space on their
paper to write drafts before writing their final
    draft for submission
  • They are unlikely to do well from one draft
