Purposes of the Elevator
  • Transports people or objects to different levels
    of a building
  • Hospitals can install elevators, and emergency
room patients can get to the emergency room
    quickly
  • Takes up less room than stairs and elevators
  • Allows handicapped people to travel from floor to
floor in a building with ease
  • Buildings can be taller and thinner because, they
can have enough room with many floors leaving
room for other buildings to be constructed

3
Impact on Humans
  • An easier way to travel to different floors of a
    building
  • Makes it possible for handicapped people to move
to different levels of a building
  • Allows people to walk less and not use up their
    energy
  • Gets people to meetings or other destinations on
    time
  • Aids in the moving of furniture

Influence on Other Inventions
  • The elevator makes it possible for cities to
    be made up of
  • skyscrapers. Walking up stairs is more of a
    hassle than
  • riding in an elevator if you are going to the
    top floor of a
  • tall building. In 1850, steam and hydraulic
elevators were introduced, and shortly after the
Era of the Skyscraper took place. The escalator
was inspired by the elevator and was invented
    later.

Questions Answered
  • Does the invention involve a new idea?
  • Yes, it shows that there are alternatives to
having stairs in a building and ways for
    handicapped people to get around.
  • Is this invention useful to many people, and is
    it easy to use?
  • Yes, anybody can ride in an elevator, and it is
so easy to use, that almost anyone can control
where it goes. All that a person has to do is
press the button of which floor they want to go
to, and it will take them to their destination.
  • Does this invention eliminate risks?
  • Elevators can get stuck while in use, but most
have an emergency button or telephone in them, so
if a person gets stuck in an elevator they can
call somebody to get them out. It is better to
use stairs if there is a fire in the building.

Fun Facts
  • Cities like New York City depend on elevators,
because they have so many skyscrapers. People
need to use the elevators to get to their
    offices, apartments, etc.
  • Skyscrapers would basically be unusable if it
    werent for elevators.
  • In 1873 over 2,000 Otis elevators were installed
    in offices, hotels, and stores.
  • Gearless traction electric elevators are used in
the Empire State Building and John Hancock
Building. They were also used in the World Trade
Centers, because they work so well that they can
even outlast the buildings that they are in.
  • Gearless traction electric elevators were
introduced in 1903, by Otis, and became the
    backbone of the elevator industry.
