Title: The Bread of Life

1
The Bread of Life
  • John 6

2
Little Boys
  • A little boy was in a relative's wedding.
  • As he was coming down the aisle, he would take
two steps, stop, and turn to the crowd.
  • While facing the crowd, he would put his hands up
    like claws and roar.
  • So it went, step, step, ROAR, step, step, ROAR,
all the way down the aisle.
  • As you can imagine, the crowd was near tears from
laughing so hard by the time he reached the
    pulpit.
  • When asked what he was doing, the child sniffed
and said, "I was being the Ring Bear."

The Three Fold Function of the Atonement.
the Spirit..has wrought a mighty change in
usthat we have no more disposition to do evil
Transforming
the Lord did strengthen them that they could
bear up their burdens with ease
Empowering
his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have
fallen
Redeeming
Question How would you know the transformation
has happened?

President Eyring
  • It seems to me most
    important and persistent is
    that
charity is at the heart of the Relief society
and is to come into the heart, to be part of the
    very nature, of every member.
  • Charity meant to early members far more than a
feeling of benevolence. Charity is born of faith
in the Lord Jesus Christ and is an effect of His
Atonement working in the hearts of the members
  • feelings of charity spring from hearts changed
by qualifying for and by keeping covenants
offered only in the Lords true Church. Their
feelings of charity come from Him through His
    Atonement. Oct Womens Conference

  • Do we know other lads?
  • John 6 10-13
  • 23rd Psalm
  • The Lord is my shepherd
  • He maketh me to lie down in green pastures

6
Important Question
  • At the end of the chapter, we are about to read
about the Savior turning down another feeding.
  • Why did He choose to feed them this time?
  • Matt 16 5-16

7
Layered Meanings of John 6
Top Layer He can do miracles
Deeper Layer His Apostles could do
miracles under his direction
Deepest Layer We can do miracles under his
direction
8
Question
  • What does it mean to magnify the priesthood or
    a calling?

9
Philippians 120
  • According to my earnest expectation and my hope,
that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with
all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall
be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by
    death.
  • Alma 519
  • can you look up, having the image of God
    engraven upon your countenances?

10
The Apostle Peter
  • And Jesus constrained his disciples to get
into a ship, andhe went up into a
    mountain, apart, to pray.
  • And the ship was tossed with the
waves for the wind was contrary.
  • And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus
went unto them, walking on the sea.
  • And when the disciples saw him walking
on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It
is a spirit and they cried out for fear.
  • But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be
of good cheer it is I be not afraid.
  • And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be
thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
  • And he said, Come.
  • And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he
    walked on the water
  • But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was
afraid and, beginning to sink, he cried, saying,
    Lord, save me.
  • And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand,
    and caught him
  • And when they were come into the ship, the wind
    ceased.

11
Finally, the 2nd Request
  • When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not
therethey also took shipping, and came to
    Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
  • And when they had found him on the other side of
the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, how camest
    thou hither?
  • Jesus answered them and said, Ye seek me, not
because ye desire to keep my sayings, neither
because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did
eat of the loaves and were filled.
  • They answered Our fathers did eat manna in the
desert as it is written, He gave them bread from
    heaven to eat.
  • Then Jesus said unto them Moses gave you not
that bread from heaven but my Father giveth you
    the true bread from heaven.
  • And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life
he that cometh to me shall never hunger and he
that believeth on me shall never thirst.
  • The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I
am the bread which came down from heaven.
  • From this time many of his disciples went back
and walked no more with him.
  • Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go
    away?
  • Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom
shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life

Elder Holland
  • To those who may feel they have somehow forfeited
their place at the table of the Lord, we say
again with the Prophet Joseph Smith that God has
a forgiving disposition, that Christ is
merciful and gracious, slow to anger, is
    long-suffering and full of goodness.
  • I have always loved that when Matthew records
Jesus great injunction, Be ye therefore
perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven
    is perfect,
  • Luke adds the Saviors additional commentary Be
ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is
mercifulas if to suggest that mercy is at least
a beginning synonym for the perfection God has
and for which all of us must strive.
  • Mercy, with its sister virtue forgiveness, is at
the very heart of the Atonement of Jesus Christ
and the eternal plan of salvation.
  • Everything in the gospel teaches us that we can
change if we need to, that we can be helped if we
truly want it, that we can be made whole,
whatever the problems of the past.

President George Q. Cannon
  • No matter how serious the trial, how deep the
distress, how great the affliction, God will
never desert us. He never has, and He never will.
He cannot do it. It is against His character
to do so. He is an unchangeable being.
  • He will stand by us. We may pass through the
fiery furnace we may pass through deep waters
but we shall not be consumed nor overwhelmed.
  • We shall emerge from all these trials and
difficulties the better and the purer for them,
if we only trust in our God and keep His
    commandments.

C.S. Lewis Last Page, Last Book, The Last
Battle, Chronicles of Narnia
  • And as He spoke He no longer looked to them like
a lion but the things that began to happen after
that were so great and beautiful that I cannot
write them. And for us this is the end of all the
stories, and we can most truly say that they all
    lived happily ever after.
  • But for them it was only the beginning of the
real story. All their life in this world and all
their adventures in Narnia had only been the
    cover and the title page
  • now at last they were beginning Chapter One of
the Great Story which no one on Earth has read
which goes on forever in which every chapter is
    better than the one before."
