2MissionThe mission of the Division of Academic
Affairs Support Services is to provide learning
resources and professional infrastructure in
support of the teaching, research, service and
community outreach activities of the University.

- Center for Teaching Effectiveness
- Held the second annual conference on the
scholarship of teaching and learning, including
faculty from other institutions. - Presented a new series of audio conference,
broadcast also to System Center. - Offered weekly seminars on numerous aspects of
teaching and learning, attended by 16-25 faculty
each week

- Computing and Information Services
- Completed first full term of use under the
Sungard Banner student information system. - Installed complete network in pharmacy building,
including 20 Cisco switches and 8 wireless access
points. - Hired full-time security analyst.
- Replaced PIX firewalls with Fortigate 3000,
providing firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion
prevention.
6Significant Accomplishments 2004-2005
- Conner Museum
- Mounted 8 major traveling exhibits, from El
Caballo The Horse in Mexican Folk Art and Out
of the Nest Artists' Birdhouses, from Exhibits
USA, several artists from the art department
(Scherpereel, Schmidt, Wissinger) the Texas
Watercolor Society and A Tejano Son of Texas. - Hosted 9,780 visitors, including 675 in school
tours.

- Distance Learning and Continuing Education
- Initiated, planned and delivered the JUMP START
Program, a comprehensive and integrated faculty
training model for electronic course development - Deployed a new WebCT Faculty Computer Lab
equipped for faculty to use in developing online
courses, in Cousins Hall 117. - Successfully completed the first dual credit
course (high school/university) via
videoconference to Three Rivers High School. - Deployed a second TTVN room at the System Center
in San Antonio.

- International Studies and Programs
- Awarded students over 30,000 in scholarships for
study abroad in 2005. - Supported 21 students studying abroad, a 49
increase over the previous year, in a wider
variety of places, including the Czech Republic,
Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy, France, and Spain. - Sponsored Fulbright Fellowship Workshop attended
by 22 faculty members.

- Jernigan Library
- Completed development of electronic reserves
project with an online request form in order to
provide remote access to resources/services. - Opened Irma Rangel Collection in the South Texas
Archives, followed by the Irma Rangel Symposium
and publication of Symposium Proceedings. - Awarded the Alexander Hamilton Traveling Exhibit
grant jointly sponsored by the American Library
Association, the National Parks Services, and the
National Endowment for the Humanities to be
presented in 2007.

- Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
- Received over 8.7 million in restricted research
support in FY2005, a 25 increase. - Received over 13 million in grants and contracts
for only the second time. ( An 8 increase over
FY2004). - Initiated purchase of InfoEd software, to
expedite the entire process of proposal
development and submission.

such as advising, complaint resolution and other
concerns for distance learning students.
