Building a Foundation for Success
5
Parental Involvement
  • Mayberry style!!!

6
Describe Andys Parental Involvement
  • Its fairly safe to say that this does NOT
represent the kind of parental involvement that
    we are looking for!
  • Unfortunately, it is what we often get!

7
Goal of Todays Training
  • Expand the expertise
  • of the school leader in parental involvement.

8
Essential Questions
  • What does the research say?
  • What is the role of the administrator in the six
    standards for parent involvement?
  • How is parent involvement connected to my
    school/district ACSIP plan?
  • Whats in the future in the area of parent
    involvement training for administrators?

9
What does the research say?
  • Theres an old saying, If it looks like a duck,
walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it
must be a duck. But, if you dont know what a
duck looks like, walks like, or sounds like, you
still wont be able to recognize it. The same
goes for continuous school improvement and the
effective school. In order to implement
sustainable school reform, you must become
acquainted with the fundamental concepts of
    continuous school improvement.
  • - Lawrence W. Lezotte

10

  • Collegiality and professionalism

12
What does the research say?
  • When families of all backgrounds are engaged in
their childrens learning, their children tend to
do better in school, stay in school longer, and
pursue higher education. Clearly, children at
risk of failure or poor performance can profit
from the extra support that engaged families and
    communities provide.

  • A New Wave of Evidence The Impact of School,
Family, and Community Connections on Student
    Achievement

13
Question

Question
  • What obstacles are keeping you from building
    effective school and family partnerships?
  • How can you use the beliefs of Henderson Mapp
to encourage Parental Involvement in your
    building?

18
Yes, more research!
  • In order to develop a parent community that
    leads, participates, advocates, and assumes
    collective responsibility, consideration of the
    following guidelines must occur
  • State explicitly your schools high expectations
    of parent participation.
  • Engage parents in developing a shared vision.
  • Make learning transparent.
  • Establish relationships that are reciprocal in
    purpose and behavior.
  • Develop structures and processes for
    parent-to-parent leadership and advocacy.
  • Assume that parents have the right,
responsibility, and ability to struggle with
    tough issues.
  • Keep parent participation broad-based.
  • Ask parents to assess their own leadership
    skills.
  • - Linda Lambert
  • Leadership Capacity for Lasting School Improvement

19
Parents as Partners
20
And yes, even more
  • The way schools care about children is reflected
in the way schools care about the childrens
families. If educators view children simply as
students, they are likely to see the family as
    separate from the school.
  • That is, the family is expected to do its job and
leave the education of children to schools. If
educators view students as children, they are
likely to see both the family and the community
as partners with the school in childrens
    education and development. Partners recognize
their shared interests in and responsibilities
for children, and they work together to create
better programs and opportunities for students.
  • - Dr. Joyce L. Epstein, Ph.D

21
National Parent Involvement Standards
  • Standard I Communicating
  • This needs to be regular (on-going), two way, and
    meaningful
  • Standard II Parenting
  • Parents skills need to be promoted and supported
    so they feel valued
  • Standard III Student Learning
  • A team needs to be created that works for student
    success
  • Standard IV Volunteering
  • Parents need to be welcomed in the school, and
    their support and assistance sought
  • Standard V Decision Making /Advocacy
  • Parents need to be full partners in the decisions
    that affect children and families
  • Standard VI Collaborating with Community
  • Community resources need to be used to strengthen
schools, families and student learning which will
make it easier for students to learn.

Ask yourself
  • Do I, as a leader, verbally and on an ongoing
basis encourage my staff to fulfill this point
and do I follow up to be sure that it is taking
    place?

24
ACSIP Relationship
  • There needs to be a marriage between academics
and parental involvement to increase student
    achievement.
  • Parent involvement needs to be student centered.
