What is a Rock?

• Any natural deposit forming part of the earths
  crust, whether consolidated or not.
• Includes Sand, Earth, Clay, etc. when in natural
  beds.

Types of Rocks

• Igneous
• Sedimentary
• Metamorphic

Igneous Rocks

• Intrusive- Formed when magma cools beneath the
  earths surface
• Extrusive- Also formed when magma cools on the
  earths surface

Is this rock Igneous?

• Yes, the crystals show it was formed by the
  cooling of magma

Sedimentary Rocks

• A rock formed from consolidated clay sediments
• Can be made of parts of other rocks, clay, sand,
  etc.

• No, there are no signs of layering

Metamorphic Rocks

• Form by subjecting rocks to extreme temperatures
  and pressures
• Meta- Greek for change
• Morph- Greek for form
