Sir John Everett Millais

• He was born in St. Helier, Jersey in 1829.
• He studied at the Royal Academy Schools.
• One of the three principal members of the
  Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood formed in 1848.
• He was made President of the Royal Academy in
  1896 but died the same year.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

• he Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was created in 1848
  by seven artists.
• Their goal was to develop a naturalistic style of
  art, throwing away rules and conventions.
• Raphael was the artist they considered to have
  achieved the highest degree of perfection.

• This was painted with oil on canvas.
• It was signed and dated JE Millais 1849 PRB.
• It was his 1st Pre-Raphaelite painting and was
  completed when he was only 19.
• he initials PRB also appear on the side of
  Isabella's stool.

  poem 'Isabella' or 'The Pot of Basil'.
• Keats's source for this poem was a tale by the
  14th century Italian author, Bocaccio.
