Title: The Dice Game

1
The Dice Game
  • Nick McMurry
  • Grade 23

2
Lesson Objective
  • This lesson is going to build on the basic math
functions (Addition, and subtraction) through the
use of a game. The students will follow the
rules of the math dice game. They will perform
addition and subtraction in the game.

3
Lesson Objective Cont
  • They also will be checking each others work and
providing help to each other when it is needed.
They will keep track of their scores using a
Microsoft excel spreadsheet which I will have
    provided for them.

4
Learning Activity
  • I will tell the students that this activity is
meant to build on the skills which they already
have in mathematics. We will be playing a game
in which we are going to have to use simple math
skills such as addition and subtraction.

5
Learning Activity Cont
  • This is a game in which we are going to use three
normal die (die which are number one through six)
and a sheet of paper to chart our results at
first. Then we will place results in an excel
program spreadsheet which I will provide.

6
Learning Activity Cont
  • We will make a tournament style bracket in which
in the end we will have only one winner in the
class. The bracket will be drawn by me on the
white board with all of the teams names on it,
the winner of the first game will then write
their name on the line provided.

7
Learning Activity Cont
  • And after all of the first games are over we then
will start the second round, the games will be
determined by the brackets. After three or so
rounds we will have a winner. The winner will
receive a couple points of extra credit.

8
Provide Information
  • We will be getting in to groups of two or three,
the names of the fifteen students will be placed
in a list and numbered one through fifteen, not
allowing the students to know what number they
    are.

9
Provide Information Cont
  • Next I will ask one student to pick a number (it
doesnt really matter what student) whatever
number he/she picks is then their teammate, and
that persons name is marked off.

10
Provide Information Cont
  • The persons who has just been marked off then
picks a number, the number that is picked is the
beginning of the next team. Then that person
picks a number representing their teammate, and
then the process begins again in which that
person is marked off the list and goes on to pick
the start of the next team.

11
Provide Information cont
  • Go along with this process until all of the
students are on a team, since there is going to
be an odd number of students put the last student
    on the last team.

12
Provide Information Cont
  • The die game has a few rules which we must
follow, first we must decide who is teammate
number one and teammate number two. Player one
will then grab two die (which are fair die, or
numbered one through six) and role those two at
    the same time,

13
Provide Information Cont
  • they then will have to take the sum of these two
die and write it down if needed (to help remember
or possibly work out the following problem).

14
Provide Information Cont
  • Next player one must grab the third die and role
that die, what ever the number is on the third
die they must subtract that number from the
number which represents the sum of the two
    previous die.

15
Provide Information Cont
  • The number which is obtained at this point in
time is the number which they will have to write
down. Next it is player two turn, following the
    same rules and processes.

16
Provide Information Cont
  • After the two have their first scores they will
place them in the designated columns of the excel
spreadsheet which I have given them. The
students will also have to add their scores in
this excel spreadsheet as they go, and the game
ends when either player reaches a score of ten.

17
Provide Information Cont
  • Now I will sample the game for the students, I
will roll the first two die and add the numbers
which are shown. Then I will role the third die
and subtract that number from the number
represented by the sum of the previous two die.

18
Provide Practice
  • After I have shown an example to the entire class
I will encourage the students to engage in a
practice round. This round will not count
    towards either teammates total score,

19
Provide Practice Cont
  • this is just to see that everyone one can follow
the order of operation with the die. First add
then subtract, I will also make sure that no one
is having trouble with the arithmetic.

20
Provide Practice Cont
  • This at first will be an individual exercise to
ensure that each student understands, and is able
to do the arithmetic. Then when we start the
game it will be a group process to check each
others work, and be just and fair when checking
    each others work.

21
Provide Practice Cont
  • Before we start the game I will have the students
come up to the computer to inform them as to how
and where to put their information in the excel
    spreadsheet.

22
Knowledge of Results
  • I will walk the class as the students are
performing their practice exercises to see how
they are doing, and if they are grasping the
concept. I will provide any help that is needed,
with the arithmetic or the rules of the game.

23
Knowledge of Results Cont
  • I will also encourage help between group members,
and reinforce a job well done. I will encourage
the students whom needs help as well on a job
well done, and to continue working on the work
given. There will be no practice exercises hand
in so all reinforcing must be done in the class
    verbally.

24
Assessment
  • At the end of the activity the students will be
given a worksheet with many of the same equations
on it as they had just finished in the game. The
students will finish this sheet, and it then will
be graded, determining the students true grasps
    on the mathematical methods.
