2002 Mazda MPV 3.0L Engine
Procedure to Access Coils Plugs

Remove the three nuts that hold on a plastic
cover, and this will expose coils 4, 5, 6.
  • Coil for cylinder 4 plug is below.
  • Coil for cylinder 5 plug is below.
  • Coil for cylinder 6 plug is below.

Driver
  • Remove three bolts holding the throttle cables
  • Move the throttle cables out of the way,
temporarily attaching to the latch that holds the
    hood support.

Driver
  • Remove the PCV valve. Hold down on black ring
against the manifold, and it will slip off
    easily.
  • Loosen clamp and separate air intake.
  • Disconnect two (2) electrical connections - I
believe these are the Idle Air Temperature (IAT)
sensor (3a) and the Throttle Position Sensor
    (TPS) (3b).
  • Remove two bolts so that unit separates from
manifold. Note that there is a metal gasket
between this unit the manifold take care not
to lose it or have it fall.

  • Remove electrical connector.
  • Remove two bolts and then remove unit from
    manifold.
  • Reach behind the manifold to find a bolt that
holds on this tube. Remove the bolt, and be
careful not to lose the bracket (it may fall off
    the hose).

  • Referencing the smaller picture, you will notice
a connector on the back of the manifold that
holds a rubber tube. You will need to reach
behind the manifold to remove this tube, but it
slips off easily with no tools.
  • Below the smaller tube (1), there is also a
larger tube used for drainage. Trace this tube
around the back (2a) and under the air intake.
You will find it easier to disconnect this tube
    at this position (2b).

Passenger
Driver
  • Remove bolt (bracket to manifold) from passenger
    side of manifold.
  • Remove bolt (bracket to manifold) from rear you
will need to reach behind the manifold and feel
for this bolt. It is beside the bracket bolt in
    that was removed previously.
  • Remove bolt (bracket to manifold) from driver
    side of manifold.
  • Move this tube from on top of the manifold to the
    side of the manifold.

  • Remove six (6) manifold bolts.

  • At this point, the manifold is loose, and you can
begin to move it out and away in a
counter-clockwise direction so as to expose the
1-2-3 plugs coils. As you begin to move it,
you may notice that this hose near the air intake
(driver side of the engine) will get in the way
(I think this is the EGR valve). Disconnect it
and you should be able to complete moving the
    manifold.

Now that the manifold is moved, the 1,2, 3
coils are exposed.
  • Coil for cylinder 1 plug is below.
  • Coil for cylinder 2 plug is below.
  • Coil for cylinder 3 plug is below.
