Title: MYTH
1MYTH
- We cant meet our future targets without a
massive wind power programme - FALSE
2TYNDALL CENTRE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCHImpact
of integrating renewables CHP into the UK
transmission networkby Wu, Jenkins and Strbach,
2002
3DTI Renewables Innovations Review February 2004
TARGET 80-88TWh, POSSIBLE 161TWh/yr or
twice what is needed
4Overall conclusions (1)
- Our wind resource is poor despite being better
than other EU countries - Wind pattern does not fit the power profile of
wind turbines - Wind cant work without back-up or our economy
will collapse - The more wind built the more back up we need
- Building 7,000 w/ts and the extra back up will
cost 200 billion at today's prices - Wind cant replace base load generation
- Wind saves very little, if any, CO2
- There are alternatives for generation and CO2
saving
5OVERALL CONCLUSIONS (2)
- Renewable electricity targets should be scrapped
as a means of reducing CO2 - They could be replaced by Regional targets for
CO2 abatement - This would open up opportunities such as
efficiency schemes, local incentives, alternative
renewables which would engender a sense of local
participation and ownership - This would remove the need for the divisive,
pointless, and widespread plunder of our
countryside
6This may be the right place for turbines but
Moudy Mea is certainly not

20DEFINING THE PROBLEM
- Aging generating plant
- Dwindling UK oil gas reserves
- Rising electricity demand
- No central authority
- Climate change
- Inadequate current renewables programme

PROBLEMS.
YOU PROBABLY ALSO BELIEVE IN FAIRIES!
