Title: Biomed 101
1Biomed 101
- A Brief Overview of the BioMedical Field
- Steven Matowik, CBET
2What is a BMET?
- BMET stands for
- Bio
- Medical
- Equipment/Electronics/Engineering
- Technician/Technologist
- Basically, we are people who repair medical
equipment.
3Who Employs Us
- Hospitals and Clinics
- U.S. Military
- Equipment Manufacturers
- Philips
- General Electric
- Independent Service Organizations
- Cohr Masterplan
- AKW Services
4Origins
- 1950s U.S. Armed Services creates medical
equipment service positions following W.W. II. - 1967 A.A.M.I. is formed and helps develop first
civilian medical equipment maintainer program. - 1971 Ralph Naders microshock danger article
in Ladies Home Journal spurs development and
implementation of standards from regulatory
agencies like the FDA,JCAHO and the NFPA.
5Origins
- 1970s Fallout from the LHJ article accelerates
growth of BMET field due to a new focus on
equipment maintenance and safety. - 1980s Improvements in equipment design and
reliability lead to changes in testing
requirements. - 1990s Continued improvements and data analysis
lead to more changes in testing requirements and
adopting new maintenance strategies. - 2000s Advancing technologies and the EMR bring
increased industry-wide integration with IS/IT
departments.
6What the BMETs Do
- Acquisition, installation, inspection and
servicing medical equipment and support systems. - Ensuring medical equipment is deemed serviceable,
safe, and properly configured to meet the mission
of the organization. - Interpret and enforce Federal, State and industry
regulations and guidelines to provide a safe
environment for both patients and staff. - BMETs throughout the field are usually active on
committees including Safety, Product Evaluation
and FMEA/CERT teams. - Additional responsibilities may include operating
the equipment, modification of equipment and
being an educational resource.
7Why We Do the Work(Besides love and money)
- Compliance with regulations and standards
generated by - U.S Food and Drug Administration 510K approvals,
SMDA, MAUDE alerts - National Fire Protection Association NFPA 99
Standards for Health Care Facilities NFPA 70
National Electric Code NFPA 101 Life Safety
Code - Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 21, and CFR 29
O S H A - State Regulatory agencies (i.e. ARRA)
8Why We Do the Work(Besides love and money)
- Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO) - Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services
- Association for the Advancement of Medical
Instrumentation (AAMI) - American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
136.3, Z98 - Underwriters Laboratory UL 554, 60601.6
9How To Become a BMET
- Completion of a 2-year BMET program leading to an
Associate of Science (AS or AAS) from an
accredited institution. - Department of Defense (DOD) Biomedical Equipment
Technician training school. - Equipment manufacturer training programs.
- Many colleges now offer a biomedical/electrical
engineering program from the undergraduate to the
doctoral level.
10Course Curriculum(normal A.A.S. program)
- Basic electronics (AC DC circuitry, Ohms Law,
Kirchhoff's Laws, Coles Law) - Analog and digital discreet circuitry
- Anatomy Physiology
- Physics and advanced Mathematics
- Instrumentation (test equipment)
- Recent additions include computer and network
skills
