Theodore Roosevelt
2
Childhood
  • When Theodore Roosevelt was a kid he had a
terrible asthma problem. His asthma was so bad
some nights he had to sit up and sleep or when it
was worse than ever, his father had to take him
on fast carriage rides to force him to breath.
Because his asthma was so bad young Teddy
couldnt go to school. Since he couldnt go to
school his aunt taught him at home. Teddy had a
great love for books, and since his family was
rich, they had a huge library
  • he filled his mind with information from the
    books.

Early Years
  • Teddy became very interested in zoology (the
study of animals) when he saw a dead seal in a
market place. In his bedroom he started the Teddy
Museum of Bugs. His family thought he was smart
enough to go to school. One day his father pulled
him aside and told him you have to make your
body. Teddy answered him by saying I will.

4
College Years
  • Teddy finally made his body. He wasnt buff,
but he was a normal average. Teddy had a new
interest, Science . The College he went to was
Harvard. His friends remember him as active,
enthusiastic, and ambitious. Even though he made
his body he wasnt a good athlete, and didnt
participate in school sports. While at school
Teddy started getting interested in politics and
after Harvard he went to Columbia Law School.

Life changing events
  • His father Theodore Sr. died on February 1878. He
also met Alice Lee in his junior year of college,
and she later became his first wife. They married
    on his 22nd birthday, October 27, 1880.

More live changing events
  • November, 1884 Teddy was elected to the New
York Assembly. He introduced a new bill called
the Reform Charter Bill. The bill passed but
Teddy suffered a double loss. Both his wife Alice
and his mother died on 2/14/1884. Alice died of
Barites Disease and his mother died of typhoid
fever. Teddy named his first daughter, Alice,
    after his wife.

7
Rancher
  • Losing his mother and wife was a very huge
loss for Teddy. He left his New York life and
started a ranch in North Dakota, called the
Elkhorn ranch. He worked on the Ranch for three
years. While being a rancher he became a healthy
strong man and rounded up a gang of outlaws (bad
guys) and took them to Dickson on foot for two
days without sleeping for fear that the gang
    would run off.

New Wife and New Politics
  • When Teddy returned to New York he told his
family that he was engaged to Edith Carow. His
family told Teddy that he should run for mayor of
New York. He ran for mayor and lost, but he
already knew he was going to lose. Teddy and
Edith were married in December of 1886 and moved
to Washington in 1887. They had 5 more children.

26th President
  • Theodore Roosevelt was vice president when
President McKinley was assassinated. Teddy took
his place as President. He was the youngest
person to become President. During this time he
assembled a great railroad in the Northwest. He
also orginized the construction of the Panama
Canal. He was the president from 1901-1909.

The Year He Died
  • Theodore died on January 6, 1919. He died in
Oyster House suddenly. To this day people
remember Teddy by the great things he contributed
    to our American History.
