Title: 33 Cell Processes Necessary for Life

1
3-3Cell Processes Necessary for Life
  • 5 Processes

2
Metabolism
  • All cell activities that build up or break down
    substances in the cell.
  • It results in the release of energy that is
    stored in the cell.

3
Respiration
  • occurs in the mitochondria to make energy.
  • 2 types of respiration
  • Aerobic (with oxygen) Your food combines with
    oxygen
  • Glucose oxygen CO2 H2O ATP molecule
    (energy unit)
  • Anaerobic (without Oxygen) Other wise known as
    fermentation.
  • Makes less energy
  • Yeast use this process, so do our muscles when
    they run out of oxygen.
  • Glucose CO2 Alcohol ATP

4
Diffusion
  • Food, water, oxygen and other materials enter the
cell through pores in the cell membrane
  • No Energy Is Needed for this process.
  • Things move from an area of high concentration to
    an area of low concentration.
  • Concentration is a measure of how much stuff is
    dissolved I in water
  • The cell membrane is selectively permeable- only
certain items can flow through the cell
    with ease.
  • Oxygen, water and food can come in
  • Waste material can move out.
  • The organelles stay in

5
Osmosis
  • Diffusion of water through the cell membrane.
  • The cell likes to be even with the outside
environment. To get even, the cell moves water
into or out of the cell in order to balance the
    inside with the outside.
  •
  • A cell in an outside high concentration of salt,
low water concentration will shrink by allowing
water to flow out of the cell, trying to make
their cell have the same concentration of water.
    hypotonic
  • A cell in a low concentration of salt, high water
concentration will expand by allowing water to
follow into the cell, trying to make their cell
have the same concentration of water. Hypertonic

6
Active Transport
  • Movement of material across the cell membrane to
bring materials into the cell, or to remove
    wastes from the cell.
  • The materials brought in can not diffuse across
    the membrane
  • IT NEEDS AND USES ENERGY TO DO THIS PROCESS
  • It brings in things that the cell does not
    diffuse through the membrane
  • It brings in materials opposite of the
    concentration
