Presentation Skills
  • Why do you need them?
  • Organising a Presentation
  • Presentation Aids
  • Delivering the Presentation

4
Organising a Presentation
  • The receiver of communication is king!
  • Think first about the purpose of your talk
  • Is there a conflict here
  • Making an oral presentation is nothing like a
    written report
  • The preparation, organisation of ideas, for a
written report or oral presentation is
    essentially the same

5
Organising a Presentation
  • Think of about half a dozen key points
  • Break your material up into units
  • Tell your audience what those units are and why
    you chose them (talk outline)
  • Use signposting techniques to guide your
    audience through the talk
  • Summarise at the end

6
Organising a Presentation
  • Consider your audience
  • Why are they there?
  • What background do they have?
  • What would be of interest to them?
  • What they can see?
  • What they can hear?
  • Plan the timings
  • How much time do you have?
  • Is there a set format? (e.g. 20 talk 5 mins
    questions)
  • How much can you say in the time available?
  • Leave time for questions

7
Organising a Presentation
  • Find out about the facilities
  • Will there be facilities for you to use
    transparencies, PowerPoint, slides etc.?
  • Have a backup plan...
  • Can you cope if your computer crashes etc.?
  • Size layout of room - will your visual aids be
    visible?
  • Can you see the room before hand?
  • This may help reduce nerves if you have stood
in the room, know how to turn on the projector
    etc.

8
