Warrants
  • Warrant a commonsense generalization about the
    world that everyone considers self-evident.

3
  • We demonstrate the logical relevance of a reason
to a claim with a warrant.
  • Warrant whenever X, then Y.

4
  • Two parts to a warrant
  • A general consequence (commonly accepted, similar
    idea)
  • A general consequence that the reader can infer
    (something specific to your evidence)

5
  • One must first ask the reader to accept something
generally known or knowable, then ask them to
accept something similar, but more specific to
your argument. A specific circumstance leads to
    a specific consequence.

6
  • The parts can relate due to
  • Cause and effect (narrow streets reduce traffic
    speed)
  • One thing is a sign of another (people removing
their coats denotes that they are hot)
  • A rule of behavior
  • A definition
  • A principle of reasoning (if that, then this)
  • Any other principle that links a condition and a
    consequence

7
  • Use warrants ONLY when you think the readers
might question your reasoning or logic.

8
  • Make sure that the warrant
  • Is true and appropriately limited
  • Applies to the reason and to the claim
  • Is appropriate and persuasive (particularly if
it is something easily understood that makes it
    easier to understand your reasoning)

9
  • The warrant must be specific, not vague or too
generally applied (everyone, all ,any, never are
examples of words that should not be used).

10
  • Non sequitur means It doesnt follow or
unwarrantedyour warrant must make sense in the
context of your claim, evidence and reasoning
