3General Food Law (Regulation EC/178/2002)
- identification of emerging chemical and/or
microbial risks in food - and feed production chains
- any information leading to suspect an emerging
(serious) risk the - competent (inter-)national agencies should
reply as a matter of - urgency and forward any relevant information
in their possession to - the Commission

and exercising vigilance and - providing evaluation of and information on
emerging risks.

OECD Report Emerging Risks in the 21st Century
An Agenda for Action
- Addresses risks that affect systems on which
society depends health, transport, environment,
food, telecommunication etc. - Focuses on important changes to major risks that
are expected to take place in the fields of
climate change, environment, technology,
demography and socio-economy - Identifies these trends and propose a framework
for studying and managing risks as they evolve
in new directions.

6Effective control of antibiotic resistance
requires a continuing strong partnership between
all parts of the health care system and the
international community. Our mutual goals must
be to improve surveillance and research, so we
can more clearly see what is happening in
antibiotic resistance and make decisions based
upon the best evidence.
7General Description
- Objectives
- creation of an "internal market" in research
- restructuring of the European research
fabric - development of an European research policy.
- Research organisations that are able to
coordinate transnationally - networking of research programmes
- mutual opening of national/regional research
programmes.

10PERIAPT STRATEGIC TOPICS
- Challenges in protecting the consumers against
novel health risks and misleading information - Identification of new or re-emerging chemical
and/or microbial risks in food and feed
production chains in an expanding EU market - Development of reliable information system
(network) on suspected emerging risks in order to
inform EFSA and competent (inter-) national
agencies.

12PERIAPT Networking
- Challenges
- No minor undertaking
- Involves long-term planning and investment in an
environment of short-term financial planning - Differences in philosophies, mandates,
institutional structures, political agendas and
financial constructs - To avoid negative repercussions of special
interest. -
13OBJECTIVES (1)
- to establish a sound basis of a future ERA-NET to
identify Emerging Risks (Regulation EC/178/2002) - to identify Member States or Candidate Countries
that are interested in coordinating the Food
Safety aspects of their ongoing national/regional
programmes
14OBJECTIVES (2)
- to agree on vision and methodology to be used to
implement - a sustainable future ERA-NET
- to define scientific challenges within selected
strategic topics and to define new opportunities
and gaps in the existing programmes with the help
of SAFE FOODS - to exchange management programmes and evaluation
practices to enhance the preparation of future
agreements/arrangements aiming at sustained
cooperation.
