Course Selection for Rising Juniors

Lets review some important elements of
scheduling courses
  • Theology courses are required to graduate from
    SFCHS.
  • Core 19 courses are required to graduate from
SFCHS with our Advanced College Prep equivalent
    diploma.
  • Required courses are needed to graduate from high
    school in Florida.
  • There are three levels of courses College Prep,
    Honors, and Advanced Placement.
  • Electives are courses not needed for graduation
(unless they meet the Practical/Performing Fine
Arts requirement) and are mostly reserved for the
    Junior or Senior year.

3
Theology Courses at SFCHS
  • All students must take Theology each year they
    attend SF.
  • All Rising Juniors will be placed in two of the
following Theology courses (master schedule will
    determine placement)

  • All rising Juniors must take English, Math,
Science, and Social Studies. A third level World
Language or another first year Language is highly
    recommended.
  • Teacher recommendations in each subject area are
the primary factor used in placing students in
appropriate courses for the next year.
  • Juniors should take English III or AP Literature
(AP Language will be offered senior year.)
  • Students who select AP should possess a strong
writing ability, the ability to do college-level
    work, and the teacher recommendation.
  • Students requesting an AP level course must meet
the AP criteria listed on page 3 of the course
    catalog.
  • A students discipline history will also be
    considered for AP placement.
  • All students must get an instructors signature
of approval for their course selection on the
    selection worksheet.

5
Core 19 Courses Math
  • Students should take the next Math class in the
    Math sequence.
  • Depending on their Math grades, their discipline
    history, and their teachers recommendation
  • Those in Geometry or Geometry Honors should
take Algebra II or Algebra II Honors.
  • Those in Algebra II or Algebra II Honors should
    take Pre-Calculus Honors.
  • Those in Pre-Calculus Honors should take
    Calculus AB.
  • All students must get an instructors signature
of approval for their course selection on the
    selection worksheet.

6
Core 19 Courses Science
  • Juniors should take the next Science class in the
    Science sequence.
  • Depending on their Science grades, their
    discipline history, and their teachers
    recommendation

    Chemistry or Chemistry Honors.
  • Those in Chemistry Honors should take Physics
    Honors (Pre-Calculus Honors is a co-requisite),
or AP Biology, or AP Environmental Science.

    (Pre-Calculus Honors is a co-requisite), or
Anatomy and Physiology Honors or AP Environmental

    AP US History.
  • Note American History Honors may be a
possibility. If you are interested, state this
course on your selection sheet (course is not
    listed in the course catalog.)
  • Any student who completed a college prep level
history course, may opt to take the same history
course, as an elective, at the AP level.
(Example a student with a credit in European
History may opt to take AP European as an
    elective credit.)
  • All students must get an instructors signature
of approval for their course selection on the
    selection worksheet.

8

    sequence.

first year World Language in their Junior year.
  • All students must get an instructors signature
of approval for their course selection on the
    selection worksheet.

9
Required Courses to Graduate in the State of
Florida
  • Students must take one year of a practical and/or
performing fine art and a semester of Life
Management Skills and a semester of Personal
Fitness in order to graduate from St. Francis.
  • All Freshmen took Life Management and Personal
    Fitness.
  • Sophomores took Computer Applications and Drawing
or Drama to meet their practical/performing fine
    arts requirement.
  • Juniors should take the remaining required
physical education course and an elective course.
  • Students who have fulfilled their requirements
may choose to take two electives.
  • Junior elective choices are listed on the back of
the 11th Grade Course Selection Worksheet.
Frequently, scheduling conflicts will require a
Junior to change their plans in this area. They
may have to change the individual course or the
type of course. Academic placements have
preference over elective courses in each
    students schedule.
  • There are a few electives that require an
    application and teacher recommendation for
    placement. Applications are available in
    guidance.

10
Seven Courses for Junior Year
  • Each Junior should now have indicated their
    courses for
  • Theology
  • English
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • World Language or Elective
  • Elective course
  • It is possible for a student to have as many as
two elective courses in the Junior year.
  • Parents should email this years teacher if they
have any questions as to the appropriate course
for their son or daughter for next year in that
    subject area.

11
Some final things to remember
  • All questions about the appropriate courses for
next year should be resolved with the individual
teachers after students meet with Mrs. Borden on
February 13th and before February 21st.
  • Course selection worksheets are due to homeroom
    by February 21st.
  • Late course selection worksheets will receive
late attention to elective course placement and
may affect academic course level placement.
