Title: MATH 20082009
1MATH 2008-2009
- Walla Walla School District
2Things to Discuss
- Pacing
- New time lines, new format
- New Standards
- What we will be teaching towards
- Materials we will be using
- Origo
- This will be your number sense
curriculum - First Steps
- Continue training and think about how to
use this professional development effectively
3PACING
- Our goal is that as students move around the
district we have a common timeline so they are
not repeating or missing important content in
math. - Outline
- Algebra Graphing are on-going throughout the
year - Geometry, Measurement, Probability teach the
content (unit) during the designated term, but
you do not need to teach it for the WHOLE term
(might only take a week or two) - Number Sense is taught through Origo. You need
to follow the sequence of the materials, although
you may slow down to review or reteach as
appropriate.
4Sample Pacing Guides
- Color coded document includes all content areas
- Text document includes only content not covered
by Origo
5Color Coded Sample
Available grade level materials to be used
Measurement standards will be the focus for the
first half of the year, and Geometry the focus
for the second.
6Text Pacing Guide
7New Standards
- Created through a combined effort of the
Washington State School Board, Independent
Consultants, OSPI, Washington teachers, Citizens
of Washington, and the Legislature.
8Alignment New and Old
- First test will be in 2010. Begin implementation
this year. - Be aware that 3rd, 4th, 5th will still be tested
on old standards this year. Use alignment
document to help you touch on the old standards
that will be tested. - Also all grade levels will need to be aware that
some of the new standards for the grade below
will not have been taught.
9Changes in Standards
- More computation
- Less content to cover but more in-depth
10CORE CONTENT
- The core content areas describe the major
mathematical focuses of each grade level or
course, guiding teachers as to where to put their
greatest time and emphasis. from OSPI p.3
11KEY CONTENT
- Additional key content for each grade level and
course presents important expectations that might
not require the same amount of instructional time
as the core content areas, including those
expectations that might extend a previously
learned skill, plant a seed for future
development, or address a focused topic, such as
scientific notation. But all the additional key
content expectations are important and expected
to be taught from OSPI p.3
12CORE PROCESSES
- Each grade level and course includes a section
on core processes with that expectations address
reasoning, problem solving and communication.
13Color Coded Sample of Standards
Italicized are Additional Key Content Standards
Where in the materials the standards are addressed
Math Standards reference number
Bolded are Core Content Standards
14Across the Grades Standards
- Broken down by core content, key content, and
core processes. - You have all grade levels.
15Tests Aligned to Standards
- We have grade level tests aligned to each
standard. - You may use as you and/or your building see fit.
- Can be a quick way to get a handle on the
material
16Dates for Inservices Related to New Standards
- Fractions (Grades 3-5)
- October 2 16 30, Nov. 13
- 300 to 500
- Measurement (Grades 2-5)
- Dates TBD
- 300 to 500
- Geometry (Grades 3-5)
- January 22 29, February 12
- 3 to 5 p.m
17Origo
- James Burnett is author, from Australia.
- Published in the United States through Sandy
Atkins. -
- Sandy Atkins was our trainer last year for our
LID Day and additional training in February. - Origos focus is on developing number sense and
computation fluency.
18Spanish Origo
- Fundamental Games directions will be translated.
- End of unit assessments will be translated.
- Think Tanks are currently in process of being
translated by the company, but not available yet. - Teachers manuals will be in English but can be
taught in Spanish as appropriate. - Student workbooks are in English but are
generally computationally based so should require
minimal explanation.
19Kinder and Origo
- Number Teachers Manual
- The range of activities in this book help
children develop a strong foundation in early
number by focusing on the four big concepts of
counting, quantity, order, and relative position.
The 60 activities and 40 blackline masters are
carefully designed to strengthen children's
abilities to represent, reason, communicate,
problem solve, and connect mathematical ideas.. - Beginning Processes Teacher Manual
- This book actively involves children in the
initial reasoning processes of identifying and
describing attributes, matching, sorting,
comparing, and ordering. The 75 activities and 37
blackline masters are carefully designed to
encourage and strengthen children's abilities to
represent, reason, communicate, problem solve,
and connect mathematical ideas.
Fundamentals Games to develop and reinforce
mental computatational strategies
20Origo Teachers Sourcebook
- Grades 1, 2, 3 we have teacher manuals
- Grades 4 5 we will have some materials to start
the year and the rest will come in October. - Each manual is divided into 12 units. Each unit
teaches a computational strategy supported with
worksheets and games, review and intervention
materials. - Teachers manual ties Figure It, Mathementals,
Student Journal, Fundamentals, Book Box of
Facts altogether. - Includes pre post test for the year (may be
different for each grade level). And a test for
each unit.
21Origo Student Journal
- Learning Log in which students record their
daily thinking and working. - 2 journal pages for each session one for class
use and one for practice. - Take a long time!
- Can do for homework or do in class or as review
the next day or for students who move faster.
22Origo Figure It(Computation Practice)
- Provides one additional page of computational
practice for every session.
23Origo Mathementals(Developing Computational
Fluency)
- These are student worksheets for intervention or
as a warm up or a review. - Referred to in Teachers Sourcebook.
24Origo Fundamentals(Games to Develop and
Reinforce Mental Computation Strategies)
- Games for developing mental computation
strategies - Materials have been purchased organized for
each teacher thanks to the District. - Two copies Your grade level the grade level
above. - Directions are translated into Spanish.
- Teachers sourcebook suggests appropriate games
to play about every 2 sessions.
25Origo Box of Facts
- Addition Subtraction (K-3)
- Multiplication Division (3-5)
- These are visual aides and models to introduce
and develop basic facts strategies. - When to use is referenced in sourcebook. (Page 3
of each unit) - Reference suggests use as intervention materials,
but for this first year it might be better to use
whole class (more students may need the
instruction).
26Origo Book of Facts
- Resources for intervention
- A range of resources for students who need extra
assistance in applying new strategies - Teachers manual for the Box of Facts.
27Origo Think Tanks(Computation and Number Sense)
- Two Kinds
- Computation and Number Sense
- Thinking Mathematically and Problem Solving
- (Addresses Core Process in Standards for
Problem Solving) - 240 activity cards answer cards
- Reproducible student progress chart
- All kids should be in the Think Tank at some
point. - Suggestion at beginning of year go through and
pull out cards you want to use as entry task. - Possible use
- Entry task
- When students finish work
- Assigned activity
28Origo Algebra for All
4 Chapters that address the Big Idea of
Algebra Equivalence and Equations Patterns and
Functions Properties Representations TEACH ONE
LESSON FROM EACH CHAPTER EACH MONTH . ONE LESSON
TAUGHT EACH WEEK.. Example 1st week of
September Equivalence Lesson 1 2nd week of
September Patterns and Functions Lesson 1
3rd week of September Properties Lesson 1
4th week of September Representations Lesson 1
29Origo
- Plan on it taking LONGER than an hour per
session. - You may need to pull materials from the grade
level below to help build concepts. - Make sure to have students regularly use
strategies after they have been taught. (Try to
incorporate into all activities)
30Origo
- As a grade level review and look at your
materials - Any questions or concerns or suggestions or ideas?
