1
Efficient water use through environmentally sound
hydroponic production of high quality vegetables
for domestic and export markets in Mediterranean
countries
A project of the European Union under the

The project will develop an economical and
ecological growing system (ECOPONICS) able of
improving the water use efficiency for major
vegetable crops in the Mediterranean
horticulture 1. By the improvement of
hydroponics systems through the ECOPONICS
technology to maximise yield level and product
quality. 2. Through the promotion of hydroponic
cultivation to a larger group of growers to
increase overall efficiency in water use. 3. By
the assurance of economic sustainability of
ECOPONICS through introduction of a quality label
for trade produce. The project with tomato as
model crop, focuses on features of unique
environmental, climate and social conditions in
developing countries of the Mediterranean region.
