5Lesson 1The Original and New Food
PyramidsIn this lesson you will get a close
look at the differences between the pre-2005
pyramid and the remodeled one.
6What is the food pyramid?
- It is a nutrition guide originally created in
1992 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA). - The USDA changed the pyramid in spring 2005
because they wanted to do a better job of telling
Americans how to be healthy. - It suggests how much of each food category one
person should eat each day.
7THE ORIGINAL FOOD PYRAMID
8The original food pyramid
- The five major food groups are shown on the
original food guide pyramid. - The tip of this pyramid contains fats sweets and
oils. This is not considered one of the major
food groups because it is not helpful in creating
a good diet. - In this diagram you should eat more foods at the
base of the pyramid and eat less of the foods at
the top.
9THE UPDATED FOOD PYRAMID
10Why was it changed?
- It had not been updated in 15 years.
- The new pyramids teaches students that they need
to - Eat a variety of foods children need to have
foods from every color, everyday. - Eat less of some foods, and more of others The
thickness of the bands tells how much of each
food is necessary. - Example for meat and protein (purple) and oils
(yellow) are skinnier than the others. That's
because you need less of those kinds of foods.
11- The major change in the new food pyramid is the
figure climbing the side of the pyramid. This is
a way of showing kids how important it is to
exercise and be active everyday.
