What is it?
  • A Dog Park, or Off-Leash Recreation Area
(OLRA), is a fenced, designated area where dogs
may legally run, play and socialize with each
other "off-leash" under the supervision of their
    owners.

Dog Benefits
  • Parks provide safe, enclosed places for dogs to
    play and run free
  • Parks provide dogs an opportunity to socialize
    with other dogs
  • An exercised dog is a healthy dog!

9
Parent Benefits
  • Parks provide an opportunity for dog owners to
meet and socialize with other dog owners
  • Parks provide educational and training
    opportunities for dog owners
  • Parks provide dog owners with the simple joy of
watching their dogs be dogs - playing, running,
and enjoying their surroundings without a tether,
    leash, or chain

10
Community Benefits
  • Parks promote responsible dog ownership and
provide a tool for realistic enforcement of dog
    control laws
  • Exercised dogs make better neighbors and are less
prone to nuisance barking and aggressive behavior
  • Parks parks create a greater sense of community
by bringing people of all ages and from all walks
of life together with a common interest

11
Park Benefits
  • There is a newly identified parks user group
Dogs and their owners. This user group is drawn
to parks for open space, fresh air, exercise and
socialization for themselves and their pets.
Coming to a park is their chosen form of
recreation, much the same as jogging or biking.
They are legitimate park users. Portland Park
