5WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
Accidental Plagiarism
Deliberate Plagiarism
- Rewriting from books or articles
- copying pasting from web pages and online
sources to create a patchwork writing - buying, downloading, or borrowing a paper
- not knowing when how to cite
- not knowing how to paraphrase or summarize
- not knowing what common knowledge is
- recycling an old paper
6Recycling an old paper?
- Self-plagiarization is wrong because each class
is supposed to represent acquisition of
additional knowledge. Recycling an old term paper
frustrates that goal. http//www.rbs2.com/plag.htm

7Causes of Plagiarism
- Everyone is doing it
- Whos going to know?readers tend not to cheat
and cheaters tend not to read - The paper is due tomorrow!
- Im a lousy writer.

13MLA BASICS
- If you cant identify an author, use the
title. Hemingways ideals were considered
outdated among the liberals of his time (Was
Hemingway an Intellectual?). - Cite the source that you are using, not the
footnote! - Ernest Hemingway. Contemporary Literary
Criticism. The Gale Group. (9
March 9 2005). - Date you accessed the database
14MLA RULES
- Keep parenthetical references as brief and as
clear as possible. Hemingways ideals were
considered outdated among the liberals of his
time (Seaton 52). - Dont be repetitive! If you include the authors
name, dont repeat it in the parenthetical note.
Seaton argued that Hemingways views were
considered obsolete among the progressive
thinkers of his era (52).

16Common Knowledge?
Her works were typically based in the rural
south. Her style is considered Southern
Gothic. She was affected by health issues. She
used the theme of religion.
17Paraphrasing or Plagiarism?
It was psychologically impossible
for Southern plantation owners to have black men
in the army during the Civil War. An armed black
man often symbolized a potential slave uprising

Most of the extra body fat that Americans carry
and the increasing incidence of Type 2
(adult-onset) diabetes - is the result of
consuming too many carbohydrates and snacking in
the evening.
Our nations problems with weight and health have
much too do with our eating patterns and
lifestyle. A typical Friday night for many of us
consists of eating three to four slices of pizza
and then collapsing in front of the television
with a bowl of chips. (Fallacy of Fad Diets).

20FREE PAPERS?
- The average cost for a 10 page paper is over 80
- Papers are generally older with dated or invented
citations - Quality is questionable, either sloppy, juvenile
or highly sophisticated - Papers circulate in many sites, so there could be
multiple copies handed in for the same
assignment!
21WHY CITE?
22REASON 1 IT LOOKS GOOD
Professors will expect a "Works Cited" or
"Bibliography" page at the end of a research
paper. This page lists the articles, books, and
other resources used while writing the paper.
Plus, it shows the work youve put into writing
and researching your paper.
23REASON 2YOURE BEING COURTEOUS TO YOUR READERS..
Academic writing is based on the writing of
others Your citations identify how
you came up with your ideas so others can follow
the trail
24REASONS 3 4ETHICS PLAGIARISM
- Not giving credit for your sources islike
robbing the authors of the original workits
denying them the recognition they deserve for
their work - (you are also lying to your reader by claiming
other peoples work as your own)
25What Do I Have to Cite?
- Books
- Articles
- Music
- Web Sites
- Email Messages
- Interviews
- Group Projects
When in doubt, CITE! (you cant get in
trouble for citing too much)
26TIPS FOR AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
- keep careful notes (writers often forget where
the information came from) - plan your research in advance to lessen the
pressure - cite all the information youve taken from
sources, whether quoted verbatim or summarized
electronic or in print - keep stylebooks /guides close by and
- bookmark citation websites
27Tips for Avoiding Problems
- Save yourself time and frustration by keeping a
thorough record of your research, a Research
Journal should include the following - where you looked (on the free web, in a research
database, etc.) - your search terms (subject headings or keywords
used) - what you found
- where you found it (book, a free web site, a
full-text database, etc.) - what you learned
- diligently recording quotations and paraphrases
- complete citations for every source
