17Strategic Issue Youth 1 - Leadership
- FACTS
- What is the full truth as to whats going on?
- __________________
- Most leaders are tired COs
- Shallow
- Lack capacity
- COs dont have time/desire/example of mentoring
or training a leader - Leadership training takes time effort
- Leadership training mentoring
- Little to no follow-up. Need to follow-up to see
results. - (I served the Lord today) instead of what I did
or what Im doing - Youth taking on Leadership role 2nd generation
- VISION
- What do we see could be?
- ________________
- Leader being prepared planning ahead
- To change the hearts of the Corps people to have
a desire to mentor and train/be mentored and
trained. - During character building activities do a(3 mo.)
group badge segment by C.O. while (character
building leader or D.Y.S.) does leadership
training and planning on the same night. Then
implement a shadowed segment where leaders have
another leader in class mentoring. - Never too young to start leadership training.
- Mentor opportunities for Jr. Soldiers, Corps
Cadets, teens, young adults in the corps. - Established leaders need to know how to mentor
others. - Leadership training during summer camp.
- Put leaders in a winning situation to lead with
passion. - Training via web or conference call
- Disciple the leader
- The need for intentional systematic leadership
training to include a mentoring relationships are
developed. - Passionate spirit-filled leadership.
- Huge resource for leadership in social services.
- Look at other churches in our area network.
18Strategic Issue Youth 2 Holistic Youth
Ministry 0-29
- VISION
- What do we see could be?
- ________________
- To create a culture where youth are Velcro-ed to
the movement - That every youth would have the opportunity to
grow/mature through 3 points of contact (for
example) study (Bible), hobby (band..),
service (internal/external) - Shift from program driven youth ministry to youth
development culture. - More intentional communication with our youth.
- The holistic approach (study, service, hobby) is
reinforced at divisional youth events. - We need intentional mentoring, discipleship and
leadership development and recruitment. - Allow youth to pick what they want to do
- More intentional communication with our youth.
- Leadership training offered for all ages such as
school of ministry. - We need to be and generate kingdom-minded
leaders. - The current youth programs are siloed by age and
gender. We need to re-order our thinking by
bringing the silos together to offer a holistic
approach. - To form a comprehensive (holistic)//customized
approach to youth ministry. - Officers/leaders using programs and materials
that may not be effective but are afraid to step
out. - We need to engage in honest evaluation of current
corps youth programs. Are they meeting holistic
needs? Is there more than one point of contact?
- FACTS
- What is the full truth as to whats going on?
- __________________
- No deliberate things for 18-30. No progression.
- We are in decline.
- Crisis environments situations.
- We have the wrong score card (we measure the
wrong things). - The C.O is doing too much (all) of the youth
work. - We look short term at specific needs/programs
rather than development. - We have an external hierarchy that slows down
progress. - Systems that hinder collaboration.
19Inside in ministry for all growth periods up to
18 and can weather the drop-out norm. Outside
new to program and can transition into ministry
and settle for the long term involvement
Strategic Issue Youth 3 Lifetime Engagement
in Corps Young adults 18 and over (boys 15, girls
17)
- FACTS
- What is the full truth as to whats going on?
- __________________
- Programmed churches squeezes the white space out.
Our white spaces need to be there in order to
build relationships with youth and family. - Youth adult realities relationships,
responsibilities, relevance. - Are things relevant to them.
- We need relationships rather than program.
- Spiritual deficiency in character building
programs. - Gender balance problem.
- Get them serving at the corps SMT
- Rind ways to identify needs of young adults in
our community and in the corps. - Try divisional young adult activities monthly,
move around each month. - How do we connect them to the mission corps.
- Where the excitement for youth are they will
grow. If there isn't any concern there wont be
growth. Is there a passion for youth. - Eric Himes at THQ
- Regeneration each year.
- Maturation doesnt happen because of
participation. - Velcro-ed to the movement instead of being
repelled.
- VISION
- What do we see could be?
- ________________
- Build relationships intergenerationally
- Continued presence of corps officers to help
throughout maturation process ie longer
appointments when its working. - Customization relevant ministry for young adults.
- There is a gap where 18-30 doesnt fill connected
to corps. - Host a young adult congress.
- We plan programs and activities and fit a
spiritual aspect into them. Maybe we should
start with the spiritual and add the activities. - Conference attendance for officers leaders sent
out from THQ for encouragement. Youth specialties
ministry. - What are other churches doing for young adults
lets find out. - Evaluate C.O.s to see where the passionate is
get youth passionate people in corps. - Someone outside of pd. person contact when they
arent there. - Shift from our version of the scouting program to
a version of Awanas with some leadership
development to grow good adults.
20Strategic Issue Youth 4
- FACTS
- What is the full truth as to whats going on?
- __________________
- Leadership burn out vs. not qualified.
- Dont put yourself in a box.
- Program gaps in age.
- Building the kingdom vs. the army (a church).
- Are we using technology to connect youth to our
programs? - Youth ministry should be customized and not
standardized. - We have opportunity to stand in the gap
education systems are failing. - Get youth involved in service ministry
- Ongoing service opportunities.
- Camping opportunities
- Get leaders hands on experience in leadership
training. - Youth being involved in working at events leads
to leadership training. - CFOT
- Leadership training mentoring.
- Social services

Actions Corps Can Take
Actions Divisions Can Take
To provide customized relevant ministry
opportunities that are not traditional. For
example Saturday evening service. Provide basic
necessities laundry, food, nursery with good
child care. Corps will conduct community
assessments with H.Q. help on young adult
needs. Develop C.C.M. for young adults
specifically.
Identify local/regional service opportunities
which can be promoted in college, coffee shop and
other young adult venues. DHQ will help corps
walk through the community assessment process,
during youth review.
Corps who have young adults attending college
away will inform the officer at the closet corps
that the young adult is in the area and contact
will be made

ministries (SA and other church) and post on
lotus notes internet THQ will put together a
template to assess the corps communities to be
passed on to the corps.
Take the opportunity to mentor a young adult in
your sphere of influence. Recognize and engage
