The Plan

• When the colonists moved to the Charlestown
  Peninsula, they disagreed as to where they should
  put their defense. Captain Richard Gridley
  outlined Breeds Hill as a more defensible place
  than the surrounding area. So the colonists built
  earthworks surrounding Breeds Hill, ditches, and
  built a long fence.

The Battle

• When General Gage saw the colonists building
  earthworks, he ordered ships in the Boston Harbor
  to open fire on them. He also sent General
  William Howe and 2,400 British Soldiers to
  capture Breeds Hill. The Fighting was so fierce,
  so to save bullets Colonial Commander Israel
  Putnam said to his soldiers, Dont fire until
  you see the whites of their eyes. The British
  eventually captured the hill after intense
  fighting.

The Aftermath

• The British captured the hill, but at a great
  loss. The British losses were enormous. The
  colonists only lost 350 soldiers. The British
  losses were 3 times that number! As the British
  could now see, fighting the colonists would not
  be easy.
