CAREER CARNIVAL
  • A Fun and Productive Marketing Program!

2
Winter Camp The Planning Time
  • The Goals
  • Scheduling Event - Best time
  • What Games
  • Ring Master / Barker!
  • The Prizes
  • Promoting the Event
  • The Cost
  • The Outcomes

3
The Goals
  • To generate more student awareness of the CDCs
    services
  • To promote more exploration of career issues by
    students
  • To assist students in feeling more comfortable
about utilizing the services of the CDC

4
Scheduling The Event - Best Time
  • When are the students on campus?
  • Time of Day (11-1)
  • Where do they hang-out?
  • Outside
  • Weather, Weather, Weather!

5
The Midway Games
  • Wheel of Major or Spin for your Major
  • Toss for Training
  • Putt for Paycheck
  • Raffle
  • Game we have dropped - Who wants a Career?

6
Wheel of Major
  • This is a Wheel of Fortune type of game
  • Students spin the wheel
  • List of majors is on the wheel
  • The gamekeeper explains to the student that a
better way to select a major is to see a career
    counselor

7
Toss for Training
  • This is a ring toss game. We changed it to a
Toss Across game the second year.
  • The student tosses a bean bag to select a degree
level they will obtain, as well as Low GPA and
    Probation just for fun
  • They receive a degree level certificate after
this game to take to the Putt for Paycheck game
  • Again this another opportunity for the gamekeeper
to encourage them to visit the CDC

8
Putt for Paycheck
  • The student is given a Putter to Putt for a
    salary
  • The certificate for Degree level received in the
Toss for Training game determines the number of
    putts
  • The salary amounts are 30,000, 60,000 and
    100,000
  • This is an opportunity for us to help the student
explore the correlation between education level
    and earnings potential.

9
Raffle
  • This will vary with each year
  • We raffle the most desirable prize(s)
  • Students earn raffle tickets by winning games
    (everyone wins!)

10
Who wants a Career?
  • In other words Who wants to be a Millionaire?
  • Our Ring Master leads this game with a contestant
answering questions on career issues (our
favorite question is Where is the CDC located on
    campus?)
  • A megaphone is very handy for this game

11
Ring Master / Barker!
  • This is one of our Career Counselors
  • Must be outgoing
  • Willing to talk to anyone and everyone
  • Can talk more and louder than any of the students
  • Willing to interrupt students in deep
    conversation on the Quad

12
The Prizes
  • Each year we contact employers that work with us
and request donations of items we can give out as
    prizes for each game.
  • The response has been overwhelming as boxes of
gifts were sent to our office
  • Some of the items logo-stamped stress ball,
cups, toy lava-lamps, soda huggies, pens,
microwave popcorn, key chains, and software
  • The University Bookstore has even donated items
    for the raffle
  • The CDC has included in the raffle a coupon for
a free Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Campbell
    Interest Skills Survey

13
Promoting the Event
  • Advertising on-campus
  • Flyers posted around campus
  • Sidewalks Chalked a couple of days before the
    event
  • E-mails sent to faculty and staff
  • Info on the CDC web site

14
The Cost
  • The first year we spent only 30.00 ( games,
    table cloth material, suckers)
  • The second year we invested money for more
permanent games since we had decided to make this
    an annual event (approx. 980.00)
  • Each year there after no more money was spent

15
So - The Outcome!
  • Students have come to the CDC after seeing us on
    the Quad
  • A more relaxed atmosphere where students are
comfortable coming to see a Career Counselor
