  • 2006 POINTS OF EMPHASIS
  • PROFESSIONALISM
  • WHAT OFFICIALS DO ON/OFF THE COURT THAT
    CREATES PROBLEMS?
  • BALL HANDLING
  • CONSISTENCY AMONG OFFICIALS NOT REALISTIC
  • SET A LINE AND MAINTAIN THROUGHOUT MATCH
  • DONT ALLOW COACH(S) TO SET YOUR LINE
  • COACHES OKAY WITH PLAY EXTENDED?
  • CALL THE OBVIOUS
  • IF UNSURE DONT CALL

42
  • 2007 POINTS OF EMPHASIS
  • PROFESSIONALISM
  • WHAT OFFICIALS DO ON/OFF THE COURT THAT
    CREATES PROBLEMS? PERCEPTION IS
    REALITY
  • BALL HANDLING
  • CONSISTENCY AMONG OFFICIALS NOT REALISTIC
  • SET A LINE AND MAINTAIN THROUGHOUT MATCH
  • DONT ALLOW COACH(S) TO SET YOUR LINE
  • COACHES OKAY WITH PLAY EXTENDED?
  • CALL THE OBVIOUS
  • IF UNSURE DONT CALL

43
Ball Handling
  • Judge contact not technique (Ugly)
  • Not body position
  • Not spin
  • Not groans, complaints
  • Not spectacularity
  • See ball come in AND go out

Over vs. Under Control
  • Held Ball over control
  • Double Contact under control
  • Ball played Player or Player played Ball?

44
Philosophy
  • Become a student of the game
  • Observe higher-level matches
  • What should not be called
  • If you find the majority of whistles are ball
handling callsyou may be calling it too tight
  • Set your line and strive to maintain it
  • Be consistent
  • Call it both ways
  • Let em play
  • Bad call

45
Attitude
  • I favor a lenient level of judging ball
handling. A poorly handled ball is a
disadvantage to the team that did it and referees
    should let it go.
  • Vs.
  • The game is better if ball handling is strictly
enforced. If we are not going to call ball
handling the team with the better skills will be
    at a disadvantage.

46
TRICKS OF THE TRADE CHECKING LINEUPS
  • WITH BALL AND BOTH LINEUP SHEETS IN HAND
  • R2 CHECKS THE LINEUP OF THE RECEIVING TEAM
FIRST, START WITH BACK ROW, ALLOW LIBERO
REPLACEMENT (IF THERE IS ONE), MOVE TO FRONT ROW,
GIVE CAPTAINS TO R1, REPEAT FOR SERVING TEAM.
  • ROLL BALL TO SERVER, RETURN LINEUP SHEETS TO
SCORING TABLE, SECURE READINESS OF ALL OFFICIALS.
  • R2 SETS ON THE RECEIVING TEAM SIDE AND GIVES
    COURT BACK TO R1.

47
TRICKS OF THE TRADE COMMUNICATE A DELAY IN SERVE
  • R1 AFTER YOUR SCAN AND BEFORE YOUR BECKON FOR
    SERVE CENTER WITH THE R2.
  • IF R2 HAS BACK TURNED, R1 HOLDS THE SERVER AND
    POINTS TO THE R2.

48
TRICKS OF THE TRADE WHO WAS IN THE NET?
  • R2 (OR R1) CALLS A NET, WHILE CERTAIN OF THE
CALL, IS UNCERTAIN WHO IT WAS EXACTLY.
  • IF ONE OF THE POTENTIAL OFFENDERS LOOKS AT YOU,
IT IS PROBABLY NOT THAT PLAYER WHO WAS IN THE
    NET.
  • IF STILL UNCERTAIN, GIVE THE S OF THE POTENTIAL
OFFENDERS WITH AN HONEST REPLY COACH, IT WAS
    EITHER 2 OR 13.

49
TRICKS OF THE TRADE BLAME THE ASSIGNER
  • A REPLY TO A JUDGMENT QUESTION, EG. IF THE BALL
IS SPINNING, ISNT THAT A DOUBLE HIT?
  • JIM BEYER HAS ENCOURAGED US NOT TO CALL A DOUBLE
HIT JUST BECAUSE THE BALL IS SPINNING.
  • OR
  • IF THE BALL PLAYS THE PLAYER, JIM BEYER SAID IT
    LIKELY NOT AN ILLEGAL HIT.

50
TRICKS OF THE TRADE GET THE CALL RIGHT
  • IF THE R2 HAS INFORMATION THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL
TO THE R1, THE R2 SHOULD STAND ON THE SIDELINE
    AWAY FROM THE POLE.
  • THE R1 SHOULD MOTION THE R2 ACROSS THE COURT.
  • POLITELY ASK CAPTAINS TO STAND AWAY AS THE EVENTS
    ARE RE-PLAYED.
  • R2 GO TO THE COACH WHO LOST THE RALLY.

51
TRICKS OF THE TRADE SUB DOES WAIT FOR
AUTHORIZATION TO ENTER
  • THE FIRST TIME A SUB ENTERS WITHOUT AUTORIZATION
FROM THE R2, BRING THE SUB BACK AND THEN ALLOW
    THE SUB WITH NO PENALTY.
  • ANY FURTHER TEAM OCCURRANCES FROM THE SAME SUB OR
A DIFFERENT SUB WOULD RESULT IN A TEAM DELAY AND
    DENY THE SUB
  • WHEN THE SUB ENTERS THE ZONE, HESITATE TO BLOW
THE WHISTLE. THIS SHOULD PREVENT THE SUB FROM
    ENTERING WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.

52
TRICKS OF THE TRADE RECOGNIZE DELAY TACTICS
  • COACHES WILL TRY TO BREAK THE MOMENTUM OF THE
OTHER TEAM THROUGH LEGAL AND QUESTIONABLE MEANS.
  • ANTICIPATE WHEN REQUESTS WILL BE MADE.
  • KNOW THE OF TIMEOUTS AND SUBS TAKEN.
  • A REQUEST FOR A LINEUP CHECK CAN BE SIMPLIFIED BY
ESTABLISHING WITH THE SCOREKEEPER, WHO IS THE
    NEXT SERVER?
