Title: Data Archiving and Space Data Interchanging

1
Data Archiving and Space Data Interchanging
  • David Giaretta
  • Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
  • Central Laboratory for the Research Councils
  • Chilton, Didcot, Oxon, UK
  • Chairman of CCSDS Panel 2

2
Outline
  • Challenges of Information gathered from space
  • Metrics on the return on investment
  • Key Considerations
  • Fragility of digital information
  • Making use of information gathered by others
  • Challenge and Work of CCSDS and ISO
  • Information Interchange and Data Description
    management
  • Reference Model for Open Archival Information
    Systems
  • Impact of Standardisation

3
Challenges of Information Gathered From Space
  • Difficult and expensive to obtain
  • and afterwards
  • Need to ensure greatest return on investment
  • Obtaining greatest scientific/commercial benefit
  • Usability by the widest audience
  • Saleability to the largest market
  • Fragility must preserve into the future

4
Metrics for Return on Investment
  • National pride
  • Scientific
  • Number of references
  • Number of publications
  • Number of requests
  • Financial
  • Sale of data
  • Investment in information systems

5
Key Considerations
  • Usability of the information now
  • Usability of the information in the future

6
Fragility of Digital Information
  • Data fragility bit level
  • Timescales of technological change and hardware
    obsolescence
  • Media can become unreadable in a few years
  • Information fragility
  • Knowledge base of users change
  • Over time
  • Supported data formats change e.g. CDF, HDS,
    FITS, JPEG, XML etc
  • Software tools become obsolete/unavailable
  • Changing user community

7
Making Use of Information Gathered by Others
  • Locate relevant data
  • Retrieve the data and metadata
  • Understand retrieved information
  • Compare and combine information from various
    sources

8
Work of CCSDS and ISO TC20/SC13
  • CCSDS as a whole has been described in the
    previous talk
  • Panel 2 is concerned with
  • Space Information Interchange Services that
facilitate the preservation, access, and exchange
of space mission-related information across the
Global Information Infrastructure and the space
    mission information systems infrastructurethese
services will increase the value of information
gathered from space by enabling it to be
transparently used by current and future users of
    the information infrastructure.
  • CCSDS recommendations are submitted to ISO via
ISO TC20/SC13 in order to become ISO Standards
  • http//www.ccsds.org

Challenge of CCSDS P2

Work of CCSDS P2
11
Work of CCSDS and ISO
  • Work on information interchange includes
  • Data description languages
  • e.g. EAST
  • Data dictionary specification language
  • Control authority system for registering data
    descriptions
  • Software tools
  • Various levels of support
  • Archive work starts with the reference model for
    open archival information systems (OAIS)
    submitted to ISO

12
Data Description Management
13
Reference Model for Open Archival Information
Systems

Impact of Standardisation
  • Larger market
  • Reduced costs/prices of your systems
  • Ease of interchange of components less
    dependence on particular manufacturers
  • Larger potential customer base for your
    information sets
  • Greater accessibility
  • Greater longevity
  • Greater usability
  • Easier access to other organisations information
  • Greater cost-effectiveness of missions
