2Radio Frequency Identification is fast emerging
new technology that offers strategic advantages
- Improve supply chain management and optimize
inventory - Real time tracking information
- Monitoring activities
- Controlling access to specific areas
- Monitoring valuable assets
- Many others
3How it works
- A sensor (reader) reads from a distance and
without line of sight a unique identifier that is
provided (via a radio signal) by an inexpensive
tag attached to an item - The information then relayed to the computer
running special processing software
4RFID tagging provides
- Greater reliability, higher level of
identification, data processing by computerized
management system, remote access to information - No need for physical or visual contact,
sustainability to harsh environment - Up to date information
- Possibility to collect additional
- information (environmental,
- activity or other information
- about an item can be relayed
- to a management system by
- demand)
5Compared to currently used barcode labels RFID
tagging
- Allows individual item identification (provides
larger amount of information) - Provides higher reliability (if bar code label is
damaged, jammed or dirty it becomes unreadable) - Allows faster reading, simultaneous
identification of multiple items - Requires virtually no labor cost to read RFID tag
- Extremely resistant to counterfeiting
- Allows locating of items from significant
distance without visual contact
6Areas for RFID deployment
Livestock, animals identification
Access control Antitheft systems, Car-keys
- Low Frequency RFID tags
- High Frequency RFID tags
- Ultra High Frequency RFID tags
- Microwave RFID tags
Library
Parking Control
Building Access Control
Hospitals, Personnel Identity
Manufacturing
Supply Chain
Marinas
Asset Tracking
7Access, Emergency and Security
- Access to specific areas or buildings can be
controlled using RFID devices distributed to
personnel. - Cars or other moving objects RFID tagged can be
controlled entering or leaving certain areas for
collecting tolls or for security reasons. - Tagging animals or people eliminates
identification errors and provides fast access to
a critical information in an emergency situation
8In the near future it is expected that every
major retailer and manufacturer will use RFID
system
- Leading manufacturers and retailers are quickly
adopting RFID initiatives from both short- and
long-term strategic perspectives. - This will force all suppliers to implement the
system to comply with common requirements
9Financial benefits
- Across industry, companies deploying RFID
technology have 15 less inventory, 17 better
order ratings, and 35 shorter cash-to-cash cycle
times. - Once the initial investment is done the
economical effect exceeds the cost of
infrastructure. - Recurring costs decreases and benefits increase
over time. - Real-time information about consumer demand and
goods in the supply chain makes business more
responsive to customers.
10Financial and logistical statistics show strong
benefits as a result of deploying RFID
- Procter Gamble expects to reduce its inventory
by 1 billion and so cut inventory carrying costs
by 200 million per year. - Wal-Mart estimates 8.4 billion in annual
savings - 6.7 billion in reduced labor costs
- 600 million in out-of-stock supply chain cost
reduction - 575 million in theft reduction
- 300 million in improved tracking through
warehousing and distribution centers - 180 million in reduced inventory holding and
carrying costs
