Human needs physical personal -

• Physical needs - food, water, clothing, shelter,
  health
• Personal needs - achievement, challenge,
  creativity, friendship, imagination,
  independence, respect, recognition, love, security

What is a right?

• Something that the law allows you to have/do
• An entitlement that is protected by the law
• A privilege / benefit granted to everyone

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights -

• This is a list of rights that was written after
  the Second World War in 1945
• Britain signed the declaration
• It establishes the dignity and worth of a human
  person
• Our rights are protected by the law

Some of our rights -

• The right to life
• The right to an education
• The right to freedom of thought and conscience
• The right to freedom of opinion
• The right to a fair and public hearing in court
• The right to be presumed innocent until proved
  guilty
• The right to have a family

Rights continued -

• The right to liberty and security of person
• The right not to be a slave
• The right not to be tortured
• The right to fair wages and equal pay for equal
  work

Task

• Read the account of Roberto and his family and
  give a brief description of what happened to them
• Explain which of his families needs and rights
  were being denied
• What is Christian Aid?
• Bring in newspaper articles that report
  situations where peoples rights and needs are
  being denied. See sheet for examples. Write a
  brief synopsis in your book.

Responsibilities

• As citizens we have responsibilities as well as
  rights
• Being responsible means taking control and being
  held accountable for our actions
• Within religious communities ceremonies like
  confirmation and bar mitzvah confer
  responsibilities

Our responsibilities-

• To take care of our families
• To help those in need
• To protect/take care of our community
• To obey the law
• Respect the environment
• Vote in elections to choose responsible leaders
