Title: How CityU Supports Applied Research

1
How CityU Supports Applied Research?
2
Role statement of CityU
emphasises application-oriented teaching,
professional education and applied
research aims at being internationally
competitive in its areas of research strength
3
Mission of CityU
  • The University anticipates and responds to the
needs of industry, commerce and the community by
engaging in applied research, and uses the
results of such work to directly benefit Hong
Kong and beyond. The University concentrates
resources to achieve excellence in selected areas
    of research.

4
2003-2008 Strategic Plan
  • Goals for Research
  • Building on established excellence by focusing
available resources on priority areas of applied
    research
  • Maintaining the research profile necessary to
support community development and to underpin our
    teaching
  • Nurturing young research talent to provide the
foundation for future economic and social
    development
  • Enhancing our ability to commercialize research
results and to mobilize expertise for the
    community
  • Supporting linkages within the region and beyond
through the networks created by active scholarship

5
What is Applied Research?
6
Definition
  • It is defined as Original work undertaken
primarily to acquire new knowledge or techniques
with a specific application in view. It is
undertaken either to determine possible uses for
findings of basic research or to determine new
ways of achieving some specific and predetermined
    objectives
  • (Australian Standard Research Classification)

7
Characteristics
  • Present an intellectual challenge
  • Have relevance to and address the needs of
    society
  • Possess good potential for implementation

8
Our Strategies
  • To fulfill our role, we have strategies on
applied research focusing on four areas
  • Policy Reassurance e.g. a new mission statement
  • Process Reinforcement e.g. revision of HR
policies on staff recruitment and personnel
    decisions
  • Resources e.g. a new Applied Research Grant
  • Rewards e.g. Applied Research Excellence Award
    Scheme

9
Our advantages
  • Application-oriented subject-disciplines
  • Good track records of success for applied
    research
  • Close links and collaboration with industry
