Henry II and Becket fought over the supremacy of
the ecclesiastical courts.Henry expected his
friend to side with him, the king.Becket did
not.

Henry II, in one of his famous rages, exclaimed,
I wish someone would rid me of these meddling
priests!
3 knights overheard this and rode to Canterbury
Cathedral. They murdered Becket on the altar of
his church.

The death of Becket angered the peasants, who
felt his Saxon heritage made him one of them.

Canterbury Cathedral became a site for pilgrims
to offer prayers to St. Thomas.

Today, a modern cross made from swords marks the
site of the martyrdom.
