Goals

• Develop rapid molecular and non- molecular
  methods that can be transitioned to international
  regional labs. Assays will be optimized and
  validated using samples from IMPAACT
• Next use these assays as gold standards for
  optimization of simpler assays that can be used
  in the field
• Serve as a resource for international labs

Potential Projects

• Mycobacterium tuberculosis
• HPLC to distinguish drug sensitive from drug
  resistant strains, perhaps directly from sputum
• Plasmodium falciparum
• Rapid commercial non-molecular assay for
  differentiation of P falciparum from other sps
• Develop a real time PCR for malaria detection
• Use this as a gold standard and evaluate a loop
  mediated isothermal amplification assay
