4
Introduction
  • The need for data-centric cellular
    infrastructures
  • An air interface must be symmetric and support
    interactive data exchange
  • Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing called
    flash - OFDM

5
Physical layer
  • The physical layer is a fast-hopped OFDM
    derivative
  • Possible to transmit a single bit with no
    overhead
  • OFDMs perennial peak-to-average power problem

6
MAC and link layers
  • Sharing a data pipe by scheduling bandwidth
    resources on both links
  • Supporting link-layer unicast, multicast, and
broadcast on downlink on the uplink only unicast
  • Optimized for bursty data delivery, but it can
also carry voice and other media flows

7
Network layer
  • Designed flash-OFDM to be deployable within a
    pure-IP network
  • The use of autonomous RRs is important

8
Mobility management
  • Supports true make-before-break (MBB)
  • Based on Mobile IP enhanced with prestandard
    handoff
  • Supports two additional handoff modes

9
Reactive make-before-break handoff
10
Fast break-before-make handoff
  • Buffering all packets if connectivity to the
    RR(RadioRouter) is interrupted
  • When reestablishing connectivity with the same
RR, mobile device will deliver the buffered
    packets
  • When reestablishing connectivity with a new RR,
mobile device will trigger the same events as in
    the reactive MBB

11
Mobile IP extensions and future work
  • Fast handoffs and handoff operation with context
    transfer
  • RadioRouters already support a prestandards
    version of these technologies
  • Flash-OFDM is designed with simplicity and
    IP-friendly

12
ROAMING AND AAA
  • Allows roaming mobile devices billable Internet
access in domains other than their home domains
  • Supports the collection of accounting records
based on the service level agreement

13
Voice
  • Designed flash-OFDM to support interactive data
  • Packet voice of flash-OFDM is higher quality than
    that of 2G or 3G
  • A fast retransmission greatly eases the task of
    header compression.

14
Multicast
  • The goal of multicast is to never transmit a
    multicast packet more than once
  • 3G network architecture is inherently unscalable
    from a multicast perspective

15
Interactive Services
  • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and IPv6 return
the Internet to its peer-to-peer origins
  • Current CDMA cellular technologies are
inappropriate for these types of services
  • Flash-OFDM is well suited for transmitting small
    amount of data

16
Conclusions
  • Enables the Internets seamless, affordable
extension to the wide-area mobile environment
  • The pure IP-based cellular network architecture
  • Straightforward, consistent, and effective
    architecture
