What is EDSL?
  • Electronic Library
  • EDSL allows users to mine and summarize various
volumes of data by creating customized views of
    data (Reports and Worksheets).
  • EDSL has three primary components
  • 1. Data repository (database) with metrics and
    student information
  • 2. Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) for
data cleaning, data mining and analysis
  • 3. Reports and Worksheets customized based on
    user's data criteria

3
EDSL Objectives
  • Deliver one-stop-shop easy access to
    institution-wide data to support decision-making
at the strategic level and school level.
  • Support operational accountability and
educational strategy using data as the basis for
    assessing program effectiveness.
  • Optimize available resources to provide
    information to educators, administrators, and
    planners.

4
Data Warehouse Structure
SASI STAR_BASE Pentamation
1. Operational data from school system is loaded
from multiple sources into EDSL Staging
Repository.
National/Virginia External Benchmarks
2. Operational data is aggregated, summarized,
and formatted to present in a multi-dimensional
view.
Datamarts
EDSL
Historical Files
3. Powerful analytical tools can then be used to
access, analyze, manipulate and print the data.

Financial Data

How did we do it?
  • Focus on business by leveraging existing 3rd
party tools like Business Objects, Oracle, APOS,
    Informatica
  • Usability is most critical!
  • Maximize data delivery options Crystal
    Enterprise environment for infrastructure
  • Project Management Best Practices
  • Customer Focus Groups
  • Project Advisory Board
  • Product Road-map and managing requirements

6
Tool features helpful for us
  • Crystal
  • Ability to export data to other applications and
    formats
  • Modify CE environment and template for customized
    user interface look n feel
  • APOS
  • Dynamic parameters for the on-demand parameter
    pages cascading parameters
  • View time security to implement filtering and we
    will be implementing subscription manager

    customers needs
  • Coming Soon!
  • Student Accountability Report
  • Multiple Test History for Student
  • Course/Teacher Correlation
  • HR Data
  • Standardized Framework

10
Advantages of a Data Warehouse
  • EDSL allows for combining multiple data sets to
see, for example, students failing a course
(grade), but scoring advanced on the
    corresponding standardized test.
  • EDSL allows for backloading of historical data to
    create student test history reports.
  •  EDSL drill down into AYP subgroups to answer
questions like who were the students that caused
my spec ed kids not to meet AYP?
  •  EDSL allows for report on any type of
    standardized test.
  • Student achievement can be analyzed considering
    other factors like attendance, demographics,
    participation in programs, and teacher
    qualifications.

11
EDSL Impact on Education
  • Supports student education by providing
school-level metrics to all levels of leadership.
  • Helps principals identify student groups that
need additional resources to be successful.
  • Helps principals develop school improvement
    plans.
