What is MAP?
  • A chance to make a difference for a middle school
    student who is in need of a positive role model
    in their life!
  • A chance to provide friendship and support to
    youth in need.
  • A chance for you to get out and have fun!!

MAP Mission
  • Every child can become the person they dream of
    becoming, regardless of social, financial, or
    personal circumstances.
  • MAP mentors are committed to providing the
    support and encouragement necessary to help
    disadvantaged children realize their potential.
  • We believe that all adolescents deserve
    role-models who will nurture their
    self-confidence, talents and visions of these
    children and help them realize their most
    precious gift, their own potential.

Why Madison Youth Need Mentors
  • Exposes students to a positive role model
  • Helps to focus students on their future and on
    setting academic and career goals
  • Exposes students to new experiences and people
    from diverse cultural, socio-economic, and
    professional backgrounds
  • Provides students with attention and a concerned
    friend
  • Encourages emotional and social growth
  • Fosters increased confidence and self-esteem

Role of the Mentor
  • Provide dependable, sincere, and consistent
    attention and concern
  • Listen, nurture, support, and advise
  • Be a person that a youth can talk to
  • Foster self esteem by providing sustained caring,
    interest, and acceptance
  • SUSTAINED ADULT RELATIONSHIP

Mentor Responsibilities
  • Beginning of Year
  • Complete necessary forms and permission slips
  • Meet your mentees parents early in the
    relationship
  • Monthly
  • Visit mentee (one-on-one and/or group activities)
  • Weekly
  • Contact mentee (phone, email, message through
    school coordinator)
  • End of Year
  • Complete evaluations
  • Determine next years plans (ending relationship,
    postponing for the summer)

Be An Effective Mentor
  • Be a friend
  • Have realistic goals and expectations
  • Have fun together
  • Give your mentee voice and choice in deciding on
    activities
  • Be positive
  • Let your mentee have much of the control over
    what the two of you talk about and how you talk
    about it

  • Listen
  • Respect the trust your mentee places in you
  • Remember that your relationship is with the
    youth, not the youths parent
  • Remember that you are responsible for building
    the relationship

Suggested Activities
  • Attend recreational or cultural activities
  • Make dinner together for their family
  • Community service or volunteer
  • Walk along State St.
  • Go to the Childrens Museum
  • Take a cooking class at Whole Foods
  • See Olbrich Garden
  • Show them the PDS rooms and let them use the
    ophthalmoscopes

What Mentors Have Done in the Past
  • going to a budget movie or renting a movie
  • cooking dinner
  • playing sports or going to a college sports games
  • ice skating or sledding
  • roller-skating
  • visiting the school campuses
  • going to the Memorial Union Terrace
  • bowling
  • hiking in the arboretum followed by a picnic
  • checking out one of the local museums
  • walking around the farmers market
  • just hanging out
  • even studying!

What if I Dont Have a Car
  • Carpool! Many of the kids are friends and live
    near each other, and you and another mentor can
    team up and hang out as a group
  • See if you can meet your mentee somewhere (the
    mall, the movies)
  • Take the bus

Cost Involved
  • You are NOT your mentees financial provider.
    Therefore
  • Plan activities that are lt10 for your mentee, or
    better yet free (we have tons of ideas)
  • Pick up coupons at the pairs orientation
  • Come to the monthly group events which are always
    free for your mentee!
