Forum (NGBF)
- Domestic Open Forum for the Standardization of
New Broadcasting Media - Members broadcasters, receiver manufacturers,
middleware companies, encoder manufacturers,
research organizations, government organizations,
and universities - Structure
3Next-Generation Digital Broadcasting Standards
Forum (NGBF) Brief History
- 1993
- Established as HDTV Co-Development Consortium
lead by Prof. Choong-Woong Lee, Seoul National
University - 1997
- Re-named as Next Generation Broadcasting
Consortium - Collected opinions on terrestrial digital TV,
digital audio broadcasting, etc. - 2000
- Re-established as Next-Generation Digital
Broadcasting Standards Forum on May 24. - President of the Forum Professor Sang-Uk Lee,
Seoul National University - 2001-2005 Produced all the first draft of
domestic T-DMB standards (Work still goes on.) - 2005 New President of the Forum Prof. Jechang
Jeong, Hanyang Univ.

5Overview of T-DMB
6Concept of DMB
Extend the concept of DAB(Digital Audio
Broadcasting) to DMB (Digital Multimedia
Broadcasting) ? ITU names it DAB (Digital Audio
Broadcasting), but Korea uses the term,
DMB, to highlight the characteristics of mobile
multimedia broadcasting.

9Service Visions of T-DMB (1)
- Why another TV-like service?
- Excellent mobile reception (TV in my
car/pocket/palm) - Receivers combined with cell phones
- Receivers combined with telematics terminals in
automobiles - Independent portable receivers
- PDA
- Notebook PC
T-DMB
DAB
10Service Visions of T-DMB (2)
- Why another mobile-phone-like multimedia service?
- free services like conventional TV
- WiBro will provide multimedia services at less
cost than mobile-phone networks. - high-bandwidth data box in my pocket for free
reception ? charges for data-service content
usage are necessary - high cost for content production
- new business models
- DMB-commerce
- A variety of interactive data services
- installation of indoor gap-fillers
- accelerating convergence of
- broadcasting and telecommunication
11Service Visions of T-DMB (3)
- Yes, T-DMB also provides FM-like services with
the following upgrades (legacy DAB services) - CD-quality Audio Broadcasting beats analog FM
- Audio possibly with slide show
- Music album jacket photos
- Studio cuts of live music show with a DJ and
his/her guests - T-DMB provides alternative upgrades for legacy
DAB services - DAB audio technology (MPEG-1 Audio Layer II,
MUSICAM) requires 384 Kbps for CD-quality audio. - ? Higher-compression audio codec is available in
T-DMB (96 Kbps) - ? Slide-show and even video-clip-show are
possible in T-DMB (MPEG-4 BIFS)
12Characteristics of T-DMB
- Valid (pure-content) bitrate per multiplex (Band
III, 1.5Mhz) 1 Mbps - Mobility Max. 200 km/h
- Coverage without gap-fillers FM Coverage
(emission power 1-2 kW) - Audio services (legacy DAB service)
- CD-quality stereo (DAB MUSICAM)
- Video services
- Video VCD-quality, 352288_at_30Hz, 5-7 in. LCD
(H.264 MPEG-4 AVC) - Audio max. CD-quality stereo (MPEG-4 ER-BSAC)
- Interactive data broadcasting (option) text
graphic (MPEG-4 BIFS) - Data services (legacy DAB services) optionally
many (BWS, EPG, Slide-show, Interactive service
protocols, etc.) - Number of channels enough to promote market
penetration - of video programs Min. 6, Max. 12 (Seoul and
its vicinity)
13T-DMB Data Services
14T-DMB data services (legacy DAB )
- Basic Protocols
- Multimedia Object Transfer (MOT) Protocol
- IP Tunneling
- Transparent Data Channel (TDC)
- Interactive Service (Network-Independent/dependent
protocols) CDMA, IMT-2000, WiBro included - Data applications
- Broadcast Web Site (BWS) NEW baseline Profile
- JPEG Slide Show
- Electronic Program Guide (EPG) using XML
- Voice EPG

19Perspectives of Mobile Multimedia
Broadcasting/Streaming in Korea
20WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet)
- WiBro is a new wireless Internet service that
uses 2.3 GHz frequency band and can provide
high-speed Internet access even in high-speed
mobile environment. Its advantages are - Much lower service charges than Ev-Do
- Much higher-speed Internet access than Ev-Do
- Mobile Internet access in high-speed mobile
environment - Much wider coverage than wireless LAN-based
services - Some Design Parameters of WiBro
- Channel Bandwidth 10 MHz
- Transmission speed per subscriber
- Uplink Min. 128 Kbps, Max. 1 Mbps
- Downlink Min. 512 Kbps, Max. 3 Mbps
- Mobility
- Max. 60 Km/h
- Service Coverage
- Pico Cell 100 m
- Micro Cell 400 m
- Macro Cell 1 Km
