Basic structure of the problem

• You have a teaching intervention that you
  hypothesize leads to better learning.
• Youd like to be able to write it up for a
  teaching of journal.
• You are not necessarily trained as an
  instructional researcher.

Instructional Research Design

• Field experiment or quasi-experiment
• No control groups or non-random assignment
• Need measures of learning
• Pre-testing /or establishing a baseline
• Need to isolate the effect of the intervention
• Pre-existing group differences

Design Continued

• What to do if you dont have a control group and
  you dont have a baseline?
• Internal Referencing Strategy (Haccoun
  Hamtiaux, 1994).
• Identify subsets of test items that are relevant
  and irrelevant to the intervention.

• Organize data
• All data for one subject on the same line
• Condition Variables
• Test Scores
• Condition Variables
• Pre-test, post test
• Intervention Level
• Relevant or Irrelevant

• Data can be entered directly into SPSS
• Or into Excel with the variable names in the
  first row then imported into SPSS
• Analyses are usually Within and Between (WABA)
• Two way analysis of variance with within and
  between subjects variables with an hypothesized
  interaction
